Q & A: MULTIMEDIA PROJECT CTHULHU DREAMT ON LOSS, SCI FI AND HORROR AS INSPIRATION

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

Hey there, I’m Reed Reimer, and I founded Fable Factory, a creative studio that develops multimedia projects like Cthulhu Dreamt, and many others. I’ve been into music my entire life, and telling stories is something I’ve always loved to do. Combining those two aspects with other creative mediums like film, or games is the ultimate for me.

I went to university for music composition, and I’ve always loved heavy music (as well as most styles and genres of all music), so I love nothing more than to pull elements from anywhere to create new and unique sounding stuff.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

We’ve got a ton of stuff in the hopper, and the first new single “TRACE Amounts of Death” will be released on Aug. 5. https://ampl.ink/CDTraceAmounts This will be the first single from our upcoming EP - Precursor. And Precursor is the music that will ramp us into the next massive project, the Cthulhu Dreamt TTRPG with original soundtrack. “TRACE…” is the track that is representative of the creatures that populate the world of Cthulhu Dreamt, so it has direct ties to the overall arc of the story, and the game as well.

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

The entirety of the music we’ve created ties into the story and world of Cthulhu Dreamt, whether the song is based in emotion (loss, grief, depression) or actual story elements, they all help build the foundation. “TRACE…” and the upcoming EP will serve as set-up for a few of the elements we’ll be fleshing out further in the TTRPG. And all of this comes from my personal experience of having lost my daughter, Ripley, at childbirth. Cthulhu Dreamt was a medium for me to work through many of the feelings and thoughts from that loss, and the story, while science fiction and horror based, is a sort-of parallel to me with Cthulhu serving as the proxy for all those negative and destructive emotions.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

Expansive story-based unrelenting diverse heaviness.

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

There’s been so many albums that have had an effect on me, and one that stands out is The Shape of Punk to Come by Refused. It’s brutal, heavy, creative, super well produced and it mixes genres… so yeah, that’s pretty much how I roll.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

We’ve only filmed one music vid to date for “Change of Scenery” and I love it. Not only was it fun to

make with Rico Roman Productions and film with Aesthetik Studio, it includes a mini film within the video that ties back into the story. So, for now, I can only mostly enjoy stuff by other artists, and there’s so much cool stuff. A video that sticks out from my recent memory is “Drone Corpse Aviator” by Archspire. That one’s a trip!

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

Hanging with my family, or working on other creative projects, whether it’s playing with my other band Portentum, or creating new stories or musical journeys for Fable Factory.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

There are always some nerves, but it’s generally made easier when I can look around at my mates and know that we’re all in it together.

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

I started the band a couple months into Covid with my friends Jeremy Myslinksi (Moon & Snow, The Coming Darkness), Ben Larson, and Jake Myslinski (The Coming Darkness). Soon after, Nate Berntson joined. For our second album Liminality, Chris Durston joined the ranks as writer and composer.

HOW DO YOU WRITE?

For Cthulhu Dreamt, basically we all come up with riffs or lyrics or maybe even the bones of an entire song, and then they’ll send those to me. I’ll take those riffs and arrange a song around that, or if it’s a full idea, I might assist in arranging, but will also ‘orchestrate’ around that and then bring it closer to a finished state. Once we’ve drafted a full song we’ll put it into a feedback and refinement period where it gets closer and work on mix… then once the instrumentals are finished, that’s when the lyric writing begins. It isn’t often that we’re writing together because most of us live in different parts of the world: Ben, me, and Nate are in the Twin Cities in Minnesota, Jake is in Utah, and Chris is in the UK.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

My mates inspire me for sure!

Also, hearing new stuff, watching new shows and movies, and reading tons of stuff helps to feed the voices in my head.

WHAT IS NEXT?

After the single will be the EP, then the Kickstarter for the Cthulhu Dreamt TTRPG/OST. It’s going to be a very busy upcoming few months!
