PLEASE TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF...
My name’s Jenny and I’m the lead singer of Don’t Wake the Neighbours. We’re a London based modern rock band and we’re really excited to introduce ourselves to you!
TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW SINGLE 'My Place in the Sun'?
My Place in the Sun was one of the very first songs we played together as a band and it feels really amazing to have seen it develop over time into what it is today. It’s a song about loneliness and trying to find a place to belong, but it’s relatively uptempo, so the sad lyrics come quite unexpectedly. We like how it sort of represents putting on a smile and masking your feelings in order to keep up appearances.
WHICH SONG WOULD YOU SAY SUMS UP YOUR SOUND THE BEST?
I think one of our recent singles, Gift Shop, is a really good way to sum up our music, although all of our tracks are a little different and allow us to explore our skills in different ways.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC?
I’ve always been musical, I was in school choirs as a kid, played piano and cornet, so it was only right to continue doing that as I got older. I started writing songs after a music homework assignment, and I found it pretty easy, so I just kept going and got better over time.
WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WRITING AND RECORDING DAY LOOK LIKE?
I write all the songs alone, sometimes I’ll put together a demo for the band so they can see the full vision. Sadly, we rarely get to record together, because we’re all busy people, so we record each instrument at the studio separately. But that makes hearing the final result all the more satisfying because you get to hear all of these parts come together into something awesome.
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR BAND NAME/ STAGE NAME?
When Simone (one of our amazing BVs) and I were living together in our first flat, we had an unfortunate coming together with our downstairs neighbour. We had been living there for nearly a year and in our first week there, we had a lovely chat with her, gave her my number, and told her that if we’re ever bothering her then she could just text us and we would be quiet. We never heard from her, so we (foolishly) assumed that she couldn’t hear us, and so we were very liberal with our bedtimes and our music volumes. All this culminated with her banging on our door at 6:00am and screaming in my face for the better part of an hour while Simone stood looking horrified in the next room.
But hey ho, we got an awesome song out of it, and a pretty cool band name, and we’re much better neighbours now.
WHAT HAS BEEN THAT HARDEST THING ABOUT YOUR MUSIC JOURNEY SO FAR?
Getting ourselves seen and heard, sometimes it feels impossible. We put loads of effort in and often it feels like we get nothing back.
WHAT'S BEEN THE EASIEST?
Having fun, which is one of the most important things to us. It’s so hard to put effort into something you don’t enjoy, so we are lucky that we’re having such a good time.
WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING IF YOU WEREN'T MAKING MUSIC?
I honestly have no idea. I’m not very good at many other things, maybe sports? I used to be quite good at cricket, and I’m a big football fan too.
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
Do what makes you happy. It might seem simple, but it’s really the best way to go through life. If something’s bringing you down, cut it out, if something brings you joy, do more of it.
WHAT'S NEXT?
We’ve just finished working in the studio for our debut album! We’re so excited! It comes out on 8th August 2025, and it’s some of our best work yet!!
