"IT'S A FLASHBACK TO EVERYTHING THE PANDEMIC DID TO US" SLOWKISS TALK ABOUT THEIR NEW ALBUM

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

Patio 29 was a dark album that came out just before the Chilean social revolt and before the pandemic, it almost feels premonitory. We released 4 singles In Vain, Time, Crash and Ballerina, all with their respective video clips, this album was a high goal for us since it was our 1st LP.

Now we are about to release our next LP titled K.O. Self produced and recorded in one of the best recording studios in Chile during the pandemic times.

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

Totally inspired by the pandemic and the society of this new era. K.O symbolizes the knockout in which the pandemic left us. It is a heavier album that at first takes you on a path of despair but reaching the end of it you can start feeling how the pandemic is moving away and the mood improves a bit with a contrast of much brighter songs. The 1st single that we will release is called N.O.C.G.A, whose acronym means No one can get away.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

K.O is a dark, pessimistic album, full of anger and strength. It's a flashback to everything the pandemic did to us and then spit us out into the new world it left us.

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

I'm terrible at choosing records or movies, it's too hard for me to choose just one. I think I owe a lot to many records that have saved me at the time, or have taught me a lot. I was lucky to grow up with a lot of rock in my parents' house but I think it was when I met Sonic Youth with Goo that my appreciation of music completely changed. That album opened the door for me to a new world of sounds that I never imagined possible. The imperfect perfection of the feedback and the noise to later get hooked on the melodies again seemed fantastic to me, and completely transformed my mind and my vision of music, besides, being a mixed band, that is, with an incredible woman in the band, one of my greatest inspirations.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER

ARTIST?

I guess my favorite SlowKiss video is In Vain. I don't want to sound materialistic with this but it is also our most expensive video and in this way I think it stands out. This was our 1st video with a great production of cameras and lighting and 1st time working with a professional director, the rest of our videos that I also like a lot, we had done with friends all diy so far, that's why you can see a good leap with In Vain . But to show that money is not everything, there is also the pretty video for Ballerina, our latest single from Patio 29 that was recorded with a camera in hand in the street with a team of 3 people and without a budget, but it's enough with the great dancer who is everything in the video and transmits the feeling of the song super well.

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU’RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

Absolutely all day working on music. Being in an independent band requires taking charge of a million things that nobody would imagine. I am worried all day about some aspect of the band, you can never stop composing, preparing concerts or tours, making posters for concerts, manufacturing merchandising, doing live sessions, contacting and managing, etc… It is a job that has no end, there is always something to do.

And definitely when I can take off a bit, what I like the most is spending time with friends, going to a concert or just enjoying the day in nature.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

Always. Sometimes more than others but always. I suffer from a bit of social anxiety and sometimes it affects me more depending on the show. It is something that you have to work on and learn to control over time. There are many things in music that you have to learn to cope with. Unforeseen events often happen on stage and if you are not able to control your emotions they can ruin the show, which is why it is important to breathe and mentally train yourself to know how to calm your head and learn to recover on the run cause the show can't stop.

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

Before SlowKiss I used to have a band more related to melodic punk, with very optimistic and youthful lyrics. But over time the need arose for me to return to my alternative roots and stop being so optimistic haha I wanted to give free rein to my imagination without style limits and be able to write from a darker and sadder place, which finally seems much more sincere from my part. In the end you always go back to the beginning and with SlowKiss I was able to start a much more mature project not only lyrically but also in terms of composition after all the experience I had previously had.

HOW DO YOU WRITE?

We like to work together for the final results. I am of the opinion that, in a band, a song does not finish "being" until everyone makes their contribution, that is the fun of playing with other people. So it can be that many times one of us brings a homemade demo or an idea to the rehearsal and from that point, we start to give life to the song. The method can always change, during the pandemic we even composed virtually by sending each other the tracks and recording each part. In the end, the important thing is to give the song the SlowKiss touch.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

The stories of our friends or people in general. In life itself that seems like a dystopia, in social issues that call our attention or that we dislike. We try to make visible topics or feelings that we believe are worth talking about.

WHAT IS NEXT?

The release of the first single from our new album and its subsequent release. A European tour in spring-summer and huge all the adventures that we have to come next 2023.
