WE TALK WITH SONGWRITER MICHAEL WEBSTER ABOUT HIS NEW EP 'A NORTHERN PERSPECTIVE'

PLEASE TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF

My name is Michael Webster, I’m a musician based here in Manchester - I run events, put on open mics, run my own record label and produce music for artists on the label!

TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE

My newest EP “a northern perspective” came out in December 2022, I’m super proud of this one, it’s got a lovely atmosphere to it and really collectively shows off my style. There’s a bunch of songs on it that I wrote a fair bit ago and I was excited to get them recorded and put them out there!

WHICH SONG WOULD YOU SAY SUMS UP YOUR SOUND THE BEST?

I think that “waterlines” is the most reminiscent of my sound, it’s punky, angry and has a real attitude to it. It’s about not being able to make up your mind, the difficulty in making decisions. I wrote this a long time ago and I’m super proud of how it came out.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC?

I really came into music as an escape from real life - I was working a job that I didn’t really care for and music provided me with an alternative, going down and performing at gigs and open mics to counteract my daytime routine. I had always had a passion for music but it took me a while to figure out that it was what I really wanted to do!

WHAT DOES TYPICAL WRITING AND RECORDING DAY LOOK LIKE?

I have my own home studio, so I often just set some time aside during the day to get things down - sometimes I’ll have a bit of spare time and I’ll just pick up my guitar and see if I can come up with something, or I’ll lay down some ideas on demos and that!

WHAT HAS BEEN THAT HARDEST THING ABOUT YOUR MUSIC JOURNEY SO FAR?

I think that the hardest thing is the financial limits that are present for musicians. It can be very expensive to record, studios are often pricey and buying the equipment yourself can take a lot of investment and time. Even then, marketing and promotion all costs and it can be a very difficult thing for someone of a working-class background to efficiently market themselves!

WHAT'S BEEN THE EASIEST?

I think that the easiest thing is actually going out and finding musicians and creatives in the local area, but that’s also a testament to the quality of the Manchester music scene.

WHAT WOULD YOU DOING IF YOU WEREN'T MAKING MUSIC?

I’ve no idea! I never really knew what I wanted to do, but when I started to do music in a professional aspect I knew that it was meant for me.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

Find your sound, be yourself and give it your all. It’s cliche, but it’s the best way to be!

WHAT'S NEXT?

I’ve just put out a record with one of the artists on the label, I produced it and it’s easily one of the best works I’ve been involved in. It’s an album called “Necromancer” by Anyone’s Ghost, you can find it on Bandcamp at
