"WE'RE AN IMMIGRANT BAND' CHOROSIA TALK ABOUT THEIR THIRD ALBUM AND ADOPTED HOMELAND

PLEASE TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

Most people describe us as prog/post-sludge metal and we’re fine with that. We don’t really think we fit within one specific genre since we’re combining a bunch of different elements from all over the metal specter. You can think of it as just good solid metal with a bit of a twist.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR LATEST ALBUM OR SINGLE

“Stray Dogs” comes out on September 15th via Grazil Records and Kvlt und Kaos Productions. It’s our third release so far and we’re really proud of this one. It’s something totally different from what we’ve done in the past so we’re really excited about it.

WHICH SONG WOULD YOU SAY SUMS UP YOUR SOUND THE BEST?

It’s hard to say, but probably “Hands, Switchblades, and Vile Vortices” for now.

DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC IN A FEW WORDS.

Heavy, dark, sludgy, proggy, confusing, challenging, discomforting.

WHO HAVE YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES BEEN?

As a band, probably High on Fire, Mastodon, Gojira, Yob, and Inter Arma.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC?

Music has pretty much always been there since very young age. I’ve been a music fan since I was 7 or something like that and I’m pretty sure it’s the same for the rest of the guys in Chorosia as well. Nothing else really ever interested me and I was never really good at anything else besides music, so I have no idea what I’d be doing if it wasn’t this. Hard to imagine anything else, really.

WHAT IS THE CREATIVE PROCESS LIKE FOR YOU WHEN MAKING MUSIC?

We’ll bring in a bunch of riffs to our rehearsal room, jam together some of those to get a feel of them and then start from picking out the best ones and turning them into something more. Sometimes I’ll have a finished song ready for rehearsing, sometimes we build it from scratch. It’s never the same approach for each song.

WHAT DO YOU THINK WOULD BE THE COOLEST COLLABORATION PROJECT BETWEEN YOU AND ANOTHER ARTIST?

Haven’t really thought about that, I guess a collaboration with a complete genre outsider would be pretty interesting. Something with ethno instruments could probably work out pretty well.

PLEASE TELL US A RANDOM FACT ABOUT YOURSELF.

Even though the band is from Vienna, none of us are Viennese. As a matter of fact, none of us are Austrian. We’re an immigrant band.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

We haven’t really been given any advice haha! On a serious note, the best advice we were given was from our friends and family who just told us to get out there and keep doing what we do. As a young underground band, you’re not always sure about anything you do. Having those people around us that push us to keep doing this truly means a lot.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ANYTHING ABOUT THE INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE?

Probably make it more about the music itself again, instead of it being all about the clicks and streams and social media engagements and reach and whatnot.

WHAT'S NEXT?

Album release shows, a tour, then lots of weekender gigs, then more tours hopefully, then new music.
