MOBO award winners, Krautrock and some Finnish power metal on this week's round-up
Rural Tapes - 'Patchwork'
Rural Tapes has released his new single ‘Patchwork’, taken from the forthcoming album Contact out February 23rd via Smuggler Music. The album is available to pre-order here.
‘Patchwork’ is a warped, glitched out and propulsive bass-laden journey into krautrock hyperspace, which opens the glorious new album from the Norwegian producer and multi-instrumentalist.
Under his Rural Tapes moniker Arne Kjelsrud Mathisen says, “‘Patchwork’ is the track on Contact which most explicitly shows the hang up I’ve had with old tape machines lately. By sampling and manipulating tapes containing tracked demos, live content, private content from reel-to-reel tapes and cassettes I’ve used them as musical instruments. The sounds and the textures are addictive stuff to me. Monotonous and motorik Neu!-era krautrock like ‘Patchwork’ leaves a lot of space for whatever fun sounds come my way. I rarely use written lyrics in my music, and I think sampling, field recordings and manipulation like this can be storytelling and open up for imagination on the same level as a written lyric.
Skindred - 'If I Could'
Widely recognised as one of the most exciting British rock bands in decades, Skindred won the award for Best Alternative Music Act at the MOBO Awards this week in Sheffield.
Reflecting on their win frontman Benji Webbe says, “To be nominated for a MOBO is such a massive deal for me and the boys in Skindred. I’ve been watching the MOBO’s since it started and always wondered why they didn’t have an alternative music category but last year that changed and was rectified with the Best Alternative Music Act added to the award ceremony. Not in my wildest dreams did I think Skindred would be at the MOBO’s but due to that new category we not only got nominated, but we actually won! As much as we were the band that’s been around the longest in this year’s nominees we weren’t guaranteed to actually win. So when the Nova Twins called our name at the ceremony we were all genuinely thrilled, buzzed and surprised. We have had so many well wishes and incredible messages of support & encouragement from all over the World. It is a great time to be in Skindred, it truly is!”
Drummer Arya Goggin adds, “We are both humbled and honoured to receive our MOBO Award. To be nominated was a dream come true, let alone actually win. I don’t think there are many bands that have won both a MOBO and a Metal Hammer award! This is what Skindred is all about.”
Arion - 'Wings of Twilight
After skyrocketing out of nowhere to the public eye as teenagers with the Finnish Eurovision qualification program UMK, and now three full-length, critically acclaimed studio albums under their belt, Finland's melodic metal frontrunners ARION have released a brand new single 'Wings of Twilight'. The track is featuring a guest appearance of AD INFINITUM singer Melissa Bonny, and was produced by Matias Kupiainen (Stratovarius) and Jacob Hansen (Volbeat).
'Wings of Twilight' (now available on all digital services via https://arion.bfan.link/wings-of-twilight) celebrated its live debut at the band's recent 70.000 Tons of Metal show, an incredible lyric video, which is almost reminiscent of a short film, is now streaming
