We get rude with the Sydney punk rock band Devon Sandwich
PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF TO US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
Hi, I’m Brett from the Punk Rock band Devon Sandwich. I like long walks on the beach and bukkakes in the evening.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM.
Our Self Tilted album has 10 tracks on it and it’s our best work to date. We got songs about Tennis, Student debt, Circle Jerks, Epstein, Joe Rogan, Bazinga Shirts, lots of fun song topics.
WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM?
Our drummer Sazza quit the band and was about to move so we booked studio time to get down the songs we had been practicing. At least half the songs are old but hadn’t been recorded and the other half we kind of had to write off the beats that had been recorded which was challenging. After all that Sazza didn’t quit in the end.

Fast. Energetic. Fun. Stupid.
WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?
I wouldn’t say changed my life, but I love ‘So Long & Thanks for all the Shoes’ by NOFX and ‘Death by Television’ by The Lillingtons.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?
‘You’re the One’ by Devon Sandwich. I filmed it and edited it. It took a while to do so I got to say that.
WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?
Selling rubber penises on Etsy, that’s my day job.
DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO, HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?
No I don’t get nervous but I’m normally not sober at gigs so that helps.
HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?
Avi and I have been doing it from the start in 2017. Avi was our drummer but wanted to sing and play guitar, so he got his mate Sazza to play the beats and he transitioned over to guitar after Adria our old guitarist had to move back to Spain.
HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?
I do most of the writing, my favorite thing to do is write songs on my acoustic guitar and develop them into something bigger and better. I feel if I sit down with the guitar for 10 minutes with no expectation I generally come out with something new, I do a rough voice memo recording so I don’t forget it and that basically is how the songs come to life.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Everything and nothing. It’s normally a phrase or a story I hear.
WHAT IS NEXT?
More music, we really want to focus on the songs. We should focus more on gigs and social media content at this point in the band, but we can’t be bothered at the moment. We have a lot of cool new songs that we want to record.
