Hi Photogroupie! I am an indie-pop artist from San Antonio Texas and go by the name of Maberry.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM, ‘DUMBO!’?

“DUMBO!” is the culmination of my artist project. It is the 5th year anniversary of me starting music and this album is definitely my way of celebrating it. I worked on it for two and a half years, and I think this album finally marks the spot where my sound and production really came into its own. I think this album sets a precedent for the future in terms of my music and I think people will be really excited to hear where I’m going with my sound and storytelling.

WHICH SONG WOULD YOU SAY SUMS UP YOUR SOUND THE BEST, AND WHY?

Besides the title track “DUMBO!” I would say “HYPOCRITE” best sums up my future sound. I like to combine intimate songwriting with exuberant or grand production and I only seem myself going down that route in the future. I just want to make sad bangers haha

HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC?

Piano! Funnily enough, my mom used to sign me up for piano lessons which I hated. I used to skip them and hide from my teacher so that I didn’t have to go. After a while, I started learning piano covers on my own and now, little did I know, I would be super grateful for those lessons all these years later. A good acoustic piano is still my favorite instrument to sit down and play to this day.

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WRITING AND RECORDING DAY LOOK LIKE?

It varies a lot but normally, I write a lot of songs before settling on a few to produce. I want to say that I have a process but normally I just manically work

HOW DID YOU GET YOUR BAND NAME/STAGE NAME?

It is the maiden name of my dad’s mom who I never met. It is my way of honoring her since my family has always said that I am the reincarnation of her.

WHAT HAS BEEN THE HARDEST THING ABOUT YOUR MUSIC JOURNEY SO FAR?

Making this album probably. This was a make or break project for me and if I didn’t make this album for myself I can’t say that I would be doing music still. Overcoming my self doubt has easily been the most difficult thing.

WHAT'S BEEN THE EASIEST?

Weirdly enough sharing my music has been the easiest. While making it is tough, the reactions I’ve gotten from sharing my art makes me only want to make and share more. Connecting with people is not always easy for me socially, but through music it is much easier

WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING IF YOU WEREN'T MAKING MUSIC?

I also work in tech to make ends meet at the current moment which I very much enjoy since there can be a lot of overlap with music production and music programming!

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

As a musician, it’s corny and cliche, but make what you want to make. It will all not matter if you don’t care about what you make. The more you like your own music and feel fulfilled from what you do from the ground up, the more fulfilled you will feel with every step you take throughout the process. And then, always maintain momentum!!

WHAT'S NEXT?

LOVE, MUSIC, and LIFE!! I’ll always have a project in the works. Also hoping to play some shows at some point, but I’m still working towards that.
