Superlung talk about making music and what's next for the band
PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.
Superlung is an Alternative Rock Band from the City of Mankato, Minnesota. Featuring ex – members of Revilwen, Almost There, Diskord, Guy Smiley, and Pushrod, they were formed in late 2018 when Jeff (Zimmy) Zimmerman – vocals, got together with Bret (Elvis) Pedersen – Guitars and Backing Vocals, and Jeremy (Boon) Buendorf – Guitar, to jam and write some new songs. Forrest Wilkes – Bass and Ryan (MQ) Mckeown – Drums, were brought in and SuperLung was created.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?
We are currently writing a new album and hope to get into the studio in late 2020 to have a new release in early 2021. The newest song we have written for the album is called “Destined to Rise”.
WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?
“Destined to Rise” was written about Zimmy’s Father who passed on roughly 2 years ago, and that the void was never and could never be filled by the loss of him. In his dreams, he sees his Father and how real they feel until the point of waking up. The new album was written about our personal experiences and current things that affect our world. How we handle adversity and carry on with life the most productive and positive way we can. We believe through our songs that most people will relate and understand and most of all feel.
CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?
Stories, questions, experiences, pain, anger, coping, focus, positivity, connection.
WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?
So many to choose from, one album for sure that changed my life is Alice in Chains – Facelift. The Seattle explosion of the early 90’s was a huge influence on SuperLung, but that album took you to very dark places, the lyrics we so deep that I gravitated to it because of the stories that were being told, it influenced me on my own writing and making sure the songs you write have a purpose.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?
I love the video from the Canadian Band Cleopatrick called “sanjake”. A very genius video, pretty much a lyric video, all takes place from text messaging along to the lyrics of the song. So cool!
WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?
We all do different things, we ride motorcycles, enjoy the outdoors buy hunting and fishing, go check out pro and college sporting events, and most of all hang out with our families.
DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?
Very seldom do I get nervous, we live to play live, that is the payoff of writing and recording music, that is the work part. Playing live is like no other rush you can get on earth. If I do get nervous, I will have a drink or two to take the edge off, but once the music starts, it usually turns euphoric and the rush starts!
HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?
Forrest and Zimmy played in a band in Palau, Sardinia – Italy when they were stationed in the US Navy together in the early 1990’s. They vowed to start a band when they got out fast forward 20 some years, it finally happened. Zimmy played in bands with Elvis, Boon, and MQ in the past so it was easy to get a great line up formed. SuperLung is based in Minnesota and Forrest lives in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, but he flies to Minnesota to rehearse and record.
HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?
We all will write things at home and bring ideas to practice. We then build on the music first and then work on the lyrics. Having the song structure makes it easy for Zimmy and Elvis to take things home and work on lyrics.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Life, family, current events, past experiences. There is never a shortage of things to write about these days.
WHAT IS NEXT?
We have songs written for a new album, we want to get into the studio and lay down some new tracks so we have an album to play out within 2021, granted that the COVID 19 crisis will allow it.
