Q & A WITH MOJO ALICE

Get your mojo working

Answered by Matty Ray - Bass player for Mojo Alice

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

Hey, we are “Mojo Alice” from Wellington New Zealand and the members in the band are Jem on vocals, Bro-d on guitar, Matty Ray on bass, and Morpheus on drums!

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

We released our debut album “Liquid Sin” September last year. It's full of rockin guitar riffs, screaming guitar solos, a groove driving rhythm section and a voice that will take you to the depths of hell but also soothe you to sleep...

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

We are all inspired by different artists and musicians and when we come together as musicians there is a certain groove or feel we get when we are playing together, and the album is just what happened to come out of that.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

Hard rock with a heavy blues groove

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

For me, there's been a few! First, it was “Thin Lizzy” when I was at an early age, and then listening to my parents' music such as “Fleetwood Mac”, “The Eagles”. After that I was getting into the heavier stuff - “Rage Against The Machine”, “Obituary”, “Sepultura” - but the record that really, really got me was “Pantera's” first major album “Cowboys From Hell”. It changed me because right then and I knew you could have melodies, harmonies, guitar solos and a killer groove all at the same time.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

For me, the music videos that I like the most are the ones that the band is just jamming and laying it down. Panteras “Revolution Is My Name” is a good example - but in saying that, you can't beat a tool music video if you know what I mean...

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

To tell you the truth, usually, I'm drinking beer and listen to music or drinking beer and watching music videos haha

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

The first few shows I was nervous as fuck! But after a few more shows you kind of embrace it, once you hit the stage - It’s on!

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

I got a phone call from Bro-D asking if I was keen to play bass, I said “yeah bro keen as!” We all met

up at the pub to talk about it, had a few beers, and the next thing we were jamming.... the rest is history!

HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?

We don't really have a main “songwriter” or “riff-writer”. It's always been a collaboration of what we believe is the best journey for the song to take.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

To me it's always been listening to music….yeah that's what really inspires me. Hearing other peoples art through sound. I just absolutely love it!

WHAT IS NEXT?

Get out and play for all of you awesome rockers out there…...and to Spread The Goddamn Word!
