Q & A WITH ALIEN FEELINGS

Nightmarish gimp porn, debauchery and rock n roll, we shoot the breeze with Alien Feelings

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

Hi, we are Alien Feelings. We are a four-piece alternative rock band from Wrexham, North Wales.

We are Josh, Dale, Ryan and Tim and we have been playing together for just over a year. Thanks for taking the time to talk to us.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

Our new EP is called bondage and lipstick, we recorded this down in London with Animal farm music at the start of the year, before the apocalypse. It was released 4/9/2020 on all major streaming platforms, you should definitely check it out! The title is a lyric from one of the tunes that features on the record called Scream. It’s a catchy, poppy alternative rock tune about being tortured to death by somebody that you love and you find that you don’t mind because you love them so much. It’s not all that songs about though, but that’s the quick synopsis.

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

In a word, life. As pretentious as that sounds, it's about those intrusive thoughts that keep you awake at night. The words better left unsaid. The undeniable truth of the human condition, smoking weed and getting pissed. Kind of being a bystander in your own life, being aware that you’re not quite as young as you were before and thinking that your time is running out to do something meaningful with your life. I suppose desperation, hard times and fantasy are what inspired the writing on this EP.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE EP?

The EP is a collection of our favourite tracks from when we formed and we were finding ourselves, we didn’t want to be summed up into one genre of music. We had a mix of songs that we felt were enough to invite people to the wave that is Alien Feelings. It has an explosive energy from start to finish. It’s 100% authentic rock and roll which we all know is lacking in the music industry at the moment. The lyrics are deep and meaningful and the whole thing just has this honesty about it, it’s everything we love about Alien feelings so far.

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

Being into completely different styles of music as individuals we’d never agree on just one record that changed our lives. So, with that being said we’ll have to go with Bondage and Lipstick…. (obviously) This is our debut record as a pretty young band and has opened the doors for us into the music industry. Now we get to chat to you lovely lot about what it all means and it’s a very exciting opportunity for us, and we will always remember this as being the record that changed all four of our lives indefinitely, no matter what. We did it.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

Scream. Because it’s ours, it's new, and it's mint. it's trippy as fuck and very creative, somewhat arousing in a shameful way. It’s like masturbating for the first time, you’ll learn to love it. It’s available on YouTube, Facebook and Instagram so come on over and check it out. Leave us a like whilst you’re there and be sure to follow us for all things Alien feelings.

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

When we’re not making music, we are usually in the pub having a laugh and playing pool. Or listening to mad playlists, whilst making fools of ourselves with outbursts of mischievous debauchery.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT? You don’t really deal with it, you just do it. You do it because at that moment you have to. People expect you to bring it and that’s all you can do. But a couple of drinks beforehand can work wonders also. Sometimes we’ve been known to have one too many, like when we played Studio 2 in Liverpool. We got into Liverpool with a busload of people that had travelled down to see us. We must have been there from five and we weren’t set to play for another three hours. After we finished soundcheck we kind of just split up and hit the streets. Ryan stayed on the bus sinking cans and smoking doobs as he does. Whilst the rest of us found the Only fools bar. Already having a couple of smokes on the way, it felt like a trip. One minute we were in Liverpool, the next we were lying on Del boys bed. The price of a beer wasn’t very cushty though. To say we were half cut by the time we got back would be putting it lightly. We still did a great job though, it was an excellent t night. We were supporting a band called The drifting classroom, it was their album launch, so we stuck around after our set to support them and we just had a hell of a night.

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

The band formed when I (Josh.) was working on a little home demo and quickly realized I had no clue what I was doing. I had the tunes, just no real knowledge of music production. I got in touch with Dale, a friend of mine and a really talented musician with a passion for recording. The two of us recorded a demo of “Good looking.” In a single session at Dales house. From there we decided that this was no longer a Josh Evans project, but the start of something else entirely. Ryan and I had played together a couple of times before and attempted to get something going, but time after time it just never worked out. So, when he joined Alien feelings he just felt like an instant fit to the band and added that something that was missing. Tim followed shortly after having never even played an instrument before, so to say we threw him in at the deep end would be a bit of an understatement. Thankfully he did not drown beyond the point of resuscitation nor was he eaten by sharks and is still with us today and continues to make leaps and bounds as we carry on this journey together.

HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER? I do the majority of the songwriting as I’ve always had a bit of a knack for it, but it is in no way a solo effort. In fact, my favourite thing about my writing process these days is how the lads will elaborate on what I give them to play with. The way some of these songs turn out in comparison to how they started is sometimes unrecognizable. I’m very lucky to have a strong band behind me. Dale also does his fair share of songwriting and even Ryan and Tim have begun to dip their toes into the craft, so in the future who knows. But for now, I’m the main songwriter.   I don’t really have a creative process except for perhaps frustration and self-loathing, like everyone else. But most of the time it happens as and when it wants to. Sometimes it could take me weeks to finish a song and then other times it’s done in ten minutes. There’s really no way to tell, you’ve just got to keep playing!

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

That’s actually a difficult question, there is no one inspiring thing. There’s also no way of knowing what’s going to inspire you next, or even if you’ll ever be inspired again. But so far what’s inspired us as a band is how good we are and how sexy we’re sounding. We've been well received by the musical community and are amazed at just how quickly we got to where we are. For as long as people want Alien feelings, we’ll keep being Alien feelings and even if they don’t, fuck them, what do they know. We just want to keep getting better.

WHAT IS NEXT?

We’ve already recorded the demos of our next release and are just excited to get back into the studio to deliver another shit hot record. In terms of gigging, we’re just in the same boat as everyone else at the moment and are waiting to hear when we can get back out there and do what we love doing with a newfound appreciation for live music that we’ve never had before. It’s going to be wild.
