Q & A: WE CHAT WITH CHARTREUSE ADDICTION ABOUT THEIR TRACK 'SUPERMAN'

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR THOSE WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR

MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

So, we’re Chartreuse Addiction, we play hard/stoner rock and consist of four members; Andrew Greig

(vocals/rhythm guitar), Kurtis Spiers (lead guitar), Callum Fraser (bass) and Gemma Costello (drums).

We’ve been a band since late 2019 played a few gigs around the Ayrshire/Glasgow area since 2021 due

to the pandemic and we’ve released one single titled “Superman” and have a couple more gigs plus

some material looking to be recorded.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

We recorded “Superman” ourselves with the help of our ex-bandmate Blair Harrison who was the main

guy for recording us. A lot of it was recorded at our ex-drummer Liam Swan’s bit; the drums, the bass,

some of the guitar and the vocals. Most of Blair and Kurtis’ parts were recorded from home. We added

quite a lot of percussion onto the track as well as Blair really likes his home recording but I think it’s

good to go for a DIY approach to recording music sometimes as saves you some dosh and gives you

experience of becoming a better audio engineer.

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

We wrote it back in 2019 as it was the first song written for the band. Lyrically, it’s about being stuck in

a toxic friendship and just being around people that aren’t what they seem. The reason why it’s called

“Superman” is because even though you know that you’re only trying to be friendly in the

situation, people don’t always buy it and just cast you out. Quite deep actually haha.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

The single, yeah. Riffy, heavy, percussive, aggressive, edgy. All you want from a hard rock song really.

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

A lot of albums; The Colour & The Shape by Foo Fighters, Welcome to Sky Valley by Kyuss, the early

Metallica albums, a lot of Queen’s material, the list goes on.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER

ARTIST?

The music video for “Walk” by Foo Fighters is pretty funny, also the music video for Queen’s “I Want

To Break Free” is legendary also.

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

Probably just our day jobs. I’d be teaching guitar as part of my tuition business, Kurtis would be doing

aircraft engineering, Callum would be farming and Gemma would be working in sales.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

Yeah sometimes but once we’re on the stage our confidence just soars. Mindfulness and breathing

techniques certainly help too.

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

Kurtis and I were in a band previously before Chartreuse Addiction and once that band dissolved me

and Kurtis formed Chartreuse with Adrian, our first drummer at the end of 2019. Kurtis and Adrian

were originally in another project before Chartreuse Addiction so it pretty much came from two

separate projects.

HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK

TOGETHER?

I (Andrew) write most of the songs in the band but we all do chip in with the music and piece it all

together at our band practice and in the studio.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

A lot of things. We’d be here all day if we had to list everything. To list some musicians/bands, there’s

Queen, Metallica, Kyuss, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Queens of the Stone Age, Sleep.

WHAT IS NEXT?

We have more gigs in the works including one at the Old Hairdressers on the 13th November with Blu

Lipz and Murdoch (Ticket link, https://fb.me/e/2FeZ2e3Ky) Plus we’re in the process of recording

more material for an EP and eventually an album.
