Q & A: THE PITS

Punk cabaret from Down Under

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

We’re The Pits, a seven piece punk cabaret band from Newcastle Australia. We say punk cabaret because we like to put on a grungy show every time we play but our music spans from tango to rock to swing jazz too oompah music, so we like to give everyone a bit of everything they like.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

It’s going to be a little different to our last EP, we are going for a less heavy more jazz/funk vibe. Our new bass player and singer have come in with some different ideas.

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

We have been playing these new songs and seeing how people are enjoying them, so we thought why not lay them down and let people listen to them whenever they want. We also think they are amazing and having something to look back on and know that you made it is an awesome feeling.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

The Pits like never before.

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

There are a million albums that have changed my life but I think the one that started it all would be A Night at the Opera by Queen, I was drawn in by Bohemian Rhapsody obviously and the sci-fi/fantasy lyrics hooked me and I haven’t looked back.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

My favourite video filmed by another artist would be The Trial by Pink Floyd, the art style and the song gives me goosebumps, I could watch it over and over.

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

Most of the time we are hanging out with friends or around the water, living on the coast the beach is always tempting during the summer.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

No, not really. There are 6 other guys on stage with you so if you make a mistake you turn and look at someone, pull a stupid face and laugh about it.

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

Our guitarist lived in Canada for a while and spent a lot of his time writing music. When he got backed he wanted to start a band so he asked a few mates to start jamming and The Pits was formed. Our trumpet player was a friend of our bass player and brought along a trombone player with him. Since then we have had a few member switches and found a permanent sax player.

HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?

Our guitarist Mitch has been our main song writer for most of our time but since then our bass player and singer Jaikob and Dain have become involved in the song and lyric writing. When the song is coming to completion it is brought to the rest of the band where everyone is allowed to sprinkle their greatness into the song.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Other bands/musicians. Hairs standing up on the back of your neck or goosebumps or even just a line in a song that you can’t stop thinking about hours after you first heard the song is something that we want other people to experience when they hear our songs.

WHAT IS NEXT?

There isn’t really a plan for next yet. When our EP comes out I’m sure we will have a plan but until then our main focus is to finish and record the songs.
