Q & A: THE DAYLIGHT ORANGE

Decade hopping psych-rock from The Daylight Orange

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

Hi, I’m Dan from The Daylight Orange. We’re based around the South West & I’d describe our sound as trying to connect the dots between 60s Psychedelia, 70s bar soaked grooves with some 80s bass lines and a heroes dose of 90s Indie Rock thrown in for good measure.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

Our latest single is called “Squeaky Little Disco” which started off as a Heavy drum and Piano groove and grew into this dark lament about failing yourself every weekend in sweaty clubs and not knowing when to catch your breath.

When we took it the studio at Animal Farm in London & Mat Leppanen who produced it got the sonic terrain spot on and it sounds like your internal monologue when in the midst of a decent Top 10 hangover.

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

I had a character in mind when writing it which I don’t normally do, but in retrospect, I think it may have turned out to be a character assassination of myself…

It’s still got some dirty drums and a watery Fender Rhodes undercurrent to it with a coda that hits the sweet spot and a “Sopranos, body in the back of a trunk on a deserted highway end of a movie vibe”.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE SINGLE IN A FEW WORDS?

Falling in Love with Headspins and hanging on to bass bins

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

DJ Shadow – Endtroducing

Matt who from the band turned me on to this album from 1996. Composed almost entirely from samples it has got everything I need from a record on it. Heavy breaks, scratchy funk guitars, organs, spoken word, heartbreak in weird time signatures and everything from Saturday Night to Sunday Morning and all the bits between. Perfect.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

It’s neck and neck with “Dayvan Cowboy” by Boards of Canada for that bucket list jump into a perfect wave or the extended cut of Aphex Twins “Widowlicker” showing the Cornish genius of Richard James’ mind.

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

I’d be deciding which vinyl I could part with next to ebay so we can get these new songs in the studio and Matt would probably be braving the elements and getting waves at at his local break in Cornwall. New recruit Matt Hombre would I imagine be only making music or playing Texas Holdem Poker.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

50/50. There’s been times when you get the jitters and need a livener or two beforehand and others when you get swept away in the evening with friends and you forget the whole build up to performing. I think I like the jitters best…

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

Matt & I have been brothers for years and have always been writing and recording in one way or another. The Daylight Orange took shape whilst we were running a bar in Exeter and we used to set up after we locked up most nights. Andy got involved with the loudest Drum workshop kit I’ve ever heard (sub speakers in his drum stool included) and we’d make a racket until the early hours and it took shape from there.

HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGEHTER?

I tend to get the majority of ideas down in demo form then pass them around, and we’ll then hammer the shit of them at volume until they take shape . Never underestimate the power of a 3am jam though as when you’re locked in it can unearth a gem or two.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Musically it’s a combination of old records and late-night radio stations where something random comes on with an interesting sound or frequency or a usual sound like elastic snapping or a percussive walk on a rocky beach. Lyrically it’s normally a phrase that’s overheard across a table or a scrambled dream that can’t be deciphered until the next day…..that sounds weird sorry….

WHAT IS NEXT?

More recording for sure. Need to top up the studio tan and get some tracks down. Get them on to vinyl and play them live to within an inch of their lives when our long lost friends the music venues open their doors to the world again.

Hopefully, some festival dates next summer too fingers crossed. Man I miss festivals so baaaaad.
