Hello, thank you so much to Photogropupie for this interview. I’m Marco from Somberwind, a gothic rock band-project I created in early 2018. Its first album, REMAIN, was released on April 09 2021, under Sleaszy Rider Records Label. It is distributed on all major streaming platforms and in many stores worldwide. We have 3 single videos for this album and I'm working on a 4th new one.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?
REMAIN is a Gothic Rock album. It includes 8 tracks or songs, each one is a theme by itself. The project is a duet between a male and a female. Caterina Nix is the lady under the pristine female vocals.
WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?
I took inspiration from the dark side of the soul for this album. The themes are mainly about tragedy, treason, revenge, sadness, despondency. The inspiration is all about those feelings we all have, but never show to the rest of the people.
CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?
Dark, deep, mysterious, magical, sacramental and rock and roll.
WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?
Many recordings have had a deep and profound impact on me as a musician and as a person too; Grains Of Sand from The Mission UK just to mention an album. Some songs like Temple Of Love (The Sisters of Mercy) have had an impact too. Bands like The Damned, The Doors, Carole King just to mention a few. Many more things have had an impact too, like Burton’s movies and horror books.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?
I think -Coven- is my favourite video by my band at this moment. I really enjoyed the production stages as well as the end result. I really loved videos from a German band, Mono Inc.
WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?
Watching horror films (The classic and the very bad ones), reading, house maintenance (I really like to repair and transform the many things in find broken my house, or that I can give a second life to)
DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?
I've been in this business since I was 15 years old so I don't feel nervous at this time of my life. Nevertheless, I still feel the magic before the shows I perform.
HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?
Well by the year 2017, I was the frontman in The Fallacy and yet I was thinking in more gothic music, you know, less dark metal and more gothic rock. So I took the decision to record a new album with
songs composed only by me. Then I realised I wanted a female voice for some verses and I asked Caterina Nix to do it. We recorded the corresponding parts of the songs in between 2018-2019.
HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?
I write the songs with my acoustic guitar first, then I plan what instruments go. I arrange the parts and melodies afterwards. Finally, I start to ensemble the whole song, or the whole thing. There is definitely no formula to do it, sometimes the keyboard melody goes first into mind. Some other times I have a verse, or a guitar part etc...
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
Anything related with the state of the soul, feelings, deep desires, grief. Anything that alters our soul and that we sometimes cannot tell to others. It is a very -intrinsic- process. But it doesn’t mean that I’m always a “closed soul'', I take inspiration from what others feel too.
WHAT IS NEXT?
Well, two more videos are coming from the album Remain, these songs are: Under This Rain and The Sad Face Of Revenge. There’s a special live session consisting of five songs coming too. And some live shows on the way.
