Q & A: SINGER-SONGWRITER CHRISTOPHER TAYLOR

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND

YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

Hi thanks for chatting to me, I’m Christopher Taylor. I’m a singer songwriter from Yorkshire in the UK.

My music is a mix of rock, pop with a bit of folk and jazz mixed in too. I’m a mature guy who’s been lucky enough to play professionally in my 20s and more recently in my 50s. Throughout my life I’ve played both semi-professionally and professionally. Music is really really important to me and has been a major feature throughout my life.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

It’s called By My Side and was recorded at the Animal Farm Studios in London

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

An experience in a personal relationship was the key inspiration in the song.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

It’s about rebuilding trust in a relationship after one of the people involved strays into the arms of another. Regret grows and there's a realisation that the new relationship isn't nearly as deep, loving and rich as the one that was left and so, it inevitably fails. It's so hard for the person who was abandoned to deal with the (known and imagined) stuff that went on within the new relationship.

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

Alice Cooper’s Schools Out made me want to play guitar and be a pop star. I even told my careers teacher that’s what I wanted to do and she didn’t laugh. And in a way it came true.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOU OR ANOTHER

ARTIST?

Being totally me me me I’ll go for my video for ‘With you life’s Beautiful’ The story line about and older couple remembering their youth really works with the mood and lyrics of the song, and the filming is fab.

Check it out it’s a great film by my friends at Summit Vision

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

I love meeting up with friends for a drink and something to eat (that’s been quite hard this last year). I like listening to music and watching other bands live. I also quite like making bread!! I love to socialise.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

A little which is good cos it keeps you on your toes. You should never take the opportunity of playing live for granted. I don’t have a set way of keeping calm, I guess I go over some of the words to my songs in my head and that helps. But it’s a good adrenalin kick.

HOW DID YOU BECOME A MUSICIAN?

Once I’d got my guitar I formed a band with some mates from youth club and then started gigging at school events and stuff and from there in my late teens joined a professional covers band. Since then have played as a solo artist and in a fair few bands.

HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU WRITE ON YOUR OWN OR WITH OTHERS? WHAT COMES FIRST, THE MUSIC OR THE WORDS?

I write all the music on my own and some lyrics, but I have a couple of friends whose lyrics I also use (They are a little better than me) I think most times the music comes first although now and again a chorus chant can make me think of a specific tune.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

I guess everything that goes on around me. Things like relationships, good and bad feature a lot in my music. Issues facing the world like climate change and other challenging stuff has an impact on what I write too.

WHAT IS NEXT?

I’m back in the studio in London again this July to record 3 new songs, Ink, Stars and No one Knows, so look out for them later this year. I’m also doing a lot more gigging I’m glad to say. If you what a singer song writer who writes catchy songs at your next event get in touch.
