Q & A: EVEREAL

Evereal talk rock and their EP 'Falling Down'

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

Thanks for having us, we are Evereal! Alicja as vocalist, Gord on bass, Stephen on guitar and Nelson on drums. We are a Rock/metal band with symphonic layers from the Vancouver area, Canada!

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

Our 4 song EP (FALLING DOWN) dropped last Jan and did very well. One song, in particular, is over 465,000 listens on Spotify at the moment!

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

Alicja: For me, this was really cool to release because these are all the new songs that I have had a part in creating, so sort of the NEW Evereal if you will. When You’re Gone is a song that took a few tries to get right, but once I did I knew we had it. I was inspired by Stephens music and was able to find the words and melody.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

Melodic, moving, emotional.

Nelson: I guess you could describe it as EMO metal.

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

Alicja: I think it was the first Evanescence album, it came out when I was in high school and I was in Rock School and we covered a lot of the songs and that is when I really started to develop into the musician I am today vocally. I turned away from pop music and came over to the rock side.

Nelson: For me it was 2112 by Rush. Not just because I’m a drummer and Neil Peart was a drum god, but also because it was like a classical piece of music with different movements. Not your standard Verse, chorus, verse, chorus, bridge. The Wall by Pink Floyd was another great concept album.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

Nelson: While I like our single When You’re Gone musically best, I think our video for I Bleed is our best music video. Steve basically produced that video all on his own. I think he did a pretty good job with limited resources. It’s got some creepy, sinister elements to it - like Alicja playing with a doll in what looks like an old insane asylum. But it also has a couple of funny outtake type clips in it. As for other bands, I really like the new Nightwish video - Noise.

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

Alicja: Either working (boo) or at the gym I suppose, I am big into fitness.

Nelson: I like to get into the mountains and go hiking or backpacking, or snowshoeing in the winter. And I do some mountain biking bikepacking. Living in Vancouver is great for that: mountains right on our doorstep. Gord is an avid ATV mudder. He’s the kind of guy who I might literally run into on a remote mountain trail - or rather he might run into me. Steve has kids so they do a lot of camper trailer camping. Again, we live in a great place for that kind of outdoor adventure stuff.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

Alicja: Always, you just go out there and do it, best way to handle it is to be prepared in the first place.

Nelson: She doesn’t show it. Alicja has great stage presence and confidence. She’s very confident on stage. Even if she’s nervous before we go on stage you would never know it. She just takes control of the stage.

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

Alicja: I came along late in the game, the project had already been started and had a change in roster for drums. Nelson came along and I was invited into the field shortly after to take over as lead vocalist. I had known Nelson through another project that he and I had worked on and that’s how I met Stephen and Gord after we all started a cover tribute band for Evanescence music.

Nelson: I was also a later addition to the band. They went through a couple of different drummers before I joined. It had started as a studio project with the first album. Steve had actually started on the project about 10 years ago. But it wasn’t really a band per se at first. Steve was just writing music and bringing in different players until they finally cut an album in 2017. And then a few members drifted off. Steve and Gord are the two original members. But we’ve been together as a unit now for about, what, three years now? I think the chemistry just really works now. It seems pretty solid.

HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?

Alicja: Stephen and I usually work together on a song, Either he will bring an idea forward or I will by various means and he will be the music and I will develop the melody and lyrics. Sometimes I bring forward my songs that I have already written and we will make it for the band or other times just a vague idea.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Alicja: Life. I can just hear a phrase and it will spark something and I will try to follow the theme and tell a story.

WHAT IS NEXT?

Alicja: Hoping to finish off an album (to be named) and release this year. Would LOVE to play live this year again.
