Q & A: DEAN ENGLAND

We chat with Dean about his new record, Jimi Hendrix and putting heart and soul into music

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

Hi guys! It’s nice to be talking to you at photo groupie. I am Dean England, I just released my first solo EP Feel Think Do… it came out the end of September and it's doing well at the moment. It’s guitar-oriented stuff with soulful vocals and some well-blended harmonies.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

It came together really fast. The last songs were written the week before recording. And “Back in Wakey” one of the tracks that's started to get air play on radio was written the day before the recording. It’s the first time I have managed to put my heart and soul into an album of music and capture everything I wanted. Hats off to my producer Mik Crone. He is always pushing me and comes up with things I wouldn’t have thought of. It’s a magic mix of musical creativity when we get together.

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

Each song has its own feel sound and message. Back in Wakey is about the first date of me and my now Mrs and the night we had together and where we are today.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

My soul put into rhythm.

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

Jimi Hendrix star-spangled banner! I saw that video at Woodstock and it took my breath away. I turned to my Dad and said. Dad, I want to do that he smiled and then showed me a few chords and I got the bug immediately… I played 8 hours a day for the 6 weeks holiday when I was a kid and music soon became my life.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

I am currently shooting my first video it will be out soon in the next 2 weeks so I will leave that there and let you guys be the judge of it… I love Richard Ashcroft's bitter sweet symphony video. When he’s walking down the street with fire in his eyes and a love for music you can feel pouring from his heart. I love that video.

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

You will find me playing with my son's, sharing my love of good food with my beautiful Mrs or writing poetry. I find poetry a good way to calm the storm of the mind sometimes.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

Before a show, I shake like a kid on the first day of school. I wish I could say I am cool as a cucumber but I am honestly not. The second I hit the first chord the nerves are replaced with a passion and fire that nothing could stop. And in that moment I feel more comfortable than in everyday life. It’s really strange to go for one extreme to the other but it feels right!

HOW DO YOU WRITE?

I write everything myself. I write when I get an idea, it’s got to be organic! It needs to flow and it can not be forced.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Moments in life that are memorable, good or bad experiences make us who we are and who I am is put into my music.

WHAT IS NEXT?

I am busy with promoting the new album it’s gone mad and I am loving it but it’s work and it takes up time. I have done four interviews in 4 days a live stream show and I am writing too. It’s all good and I am grateful every day for the love that's shown and the fans that are enjoying the music I write.
