Hi I am Tommy, and I am the vocalist for Cynic Cult. I've been singing and playing music for over 20 years now. Shay is the other half of the band and he has well over 20 years playing under his belt too.
TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?
We have been busy writing and recording our up coming EP 'Metamorphosis, along with a new anti bullying track (fader) that will be released in the coming weeks.
WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?
Shay is the backbone of this group, writing powerful songs. All music and instruments are played and recorded by him. His sound speaks to me and I write and sing with the feelings I get from his music.
CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?
The EP will be honest. No filler. True feeling music and lyrical content.
WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?
I'm a fan of so many genres and bands, but when I first heard Tool that was a game changer. Their music and vocal style blew me away, it made me want to push my limits.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?
Tools video for sober is one of my favourite ever videos.
WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?
When I'm not making or performing music I'm listening to it. Cliche as it sounds… music is my world, my happy place. Also outdoors fresh air and nature.
DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?
Every single time. Every show I'm nervous.. I go away from everyone so I can focus. Get in my gig mode. Tommy on stage is different to Tommy off stage. I use the nervous energy to push me. It works for me.
HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?
I got to know shay through the music scene in Dublin when I was performing in my Tool tribute band. He told me he was writing original stuff and asked if I'd like to sing on it. I love his style and was delighted to get the opportunity to sing on it.
HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?
Well, Shay takes care of the music side of things and we have both written lyrics. Shay already had lyrics for some earlier songs but the rest, and all the new material are a blank slate for me to scratch my piece onto them. We bounce ideas off each other and trust each other.
WHAT INSPIRES YOU?
The joy I get watching my favourite bands is the joy I want to provide our fans. Music has no limits and speaks volumes. It's a great platform for sharing thoughts and ideas. That inspires me to want to write and perform.
WHAT IS NEXT?
Keep writing and recording! Release our new single (Fader) soon which as I said before is an anti bullying song.
All going well we should have our EP out this summer.
