PLEASE TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF…

Hi. My name is Josh. I make music as ttwig. I play every musical instrument. I grew up in NY, lived in LA for 5 years and now I live in London. I wanna be a dog.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM

'Hang Ten Colors to Catch the Sun'?

This is my 2nd record as ttwig. This record was made in 2020 during the same inspirational surge as my debut, Mindless Meadow. A lot of transformations were taking place during this time which were in turn captured in the music on this record. All of the photos used for the artwork were taken on 35mm film by me.

WHICH SONG WOULD YOU SAY SUMS UP YOUR SOUND THE BEST?

I’d say have a listen to Ride the Wave.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC?

My 2 best friends in 4th grade (10 years old) were begging me to join the jazz band with them. I went over my friends house after school one day so he could help me learn the trumpet so I could impress the jazz band conductor with my audition. He played the outro melody to the Spongebob Squarepants theme song, passed the trumpet to me and told me it’d take a while to learn but that I’d get it eventually. I played it back to him first try and the rest is history!

WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WRITING AND RECORDING DAY LOOK LIKE?

I’ve become way more of a morning person, but the process has pretty much remained the same. Many times I will start tinkering with some chords on the guitar and see what happens. When I intentionally sit down to write, there is usually an emotion or feeling I am trying to capture, so I try to let that come through organically. From there I do my best to get out of my own way and let the music tell me what to write.

HOW DID YOU GET YOUR BAND NAME/ STAGE NAME?

ttwig (And Goes, And Ghost) was the title of the last track on my album Overthin King by my other alias, JUICEB☮️X. ttwig stands for “that’s the way it goes” a nice little bit of stoicism that has helped me get out of my head over the years. I always loved how the word looked written out all lowercase and twigs (little sticks from trees) are tight. It felt like the perfect moniker for this sound.

WHAT HAS BEEN THAT HARDEST THING ABOUT YOUR MUSIC JOURNEY SO FAR?

In this current age, it’s hard to get your music heard. There’s such an oversaturation in the market. Factor in the streaming platforms with their algorithms, social media with its pay-to-play structure and the trending shorter attention spans of humanity and it’s a whirlwind. I find solace in the fact that music can only be discovered if it’s released, so I have hope it will find its audience naturally.

WHAT'S BEEN THE EASIEST?

I love making music. That’s the easiest thing for me to do which is also the most important, so that’s kewl.

WHAT WOULD YOU BE DOING IF YOU WEREN'T MAKING MUSIC?

Probably something in the skateboard world or travelling the globe.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?

You can pick your friends and you can pick your nose, but you can’t pick your friends' nose. But now that I think of it, you can. I think I will do this later…

WHAT'S NEXT?

More music! But for now, let’s all be present and listen to this record.
