PLEASE TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF
My name is Lee and I’m the vocalist and guitarist in Lullaby Riot, a band from Hertfordshire in the UK, we play mostly punk, which is to say it’s fast and angry, but there are little bits of all sorts in the songs
TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW EP
Our new EP is called Social Grievances, and we recorded over a weekend at London Road Studios in Baldock in the UK. It’ll have 4 songs, some of which we’ve been playing for a while and some we haven’t played too often. But the exciting part is that we recorded these to a much higher standard this time. We recorded two EP’s before, but they were done live so the results were mixed. A side from that we have a different line up now and as a band we’ve got better at what we do, so this EP is really going to capture everything that’s been going on for the last year or so, it’s being mixed and mastered right now, and we’re expecting it to be later this year.
WHICH SONG WOULD YOU SAY SUMS UP YOUR SOUND THE BEST?
Speaking for myself I’d say Ugly State, I really like the main riff, the song lyrically is about a few ideas. How politicians get to have such a say in our lives, how we’re brought up to basically work until we can’t anymore, and over all the song is about the few that get to decide the fate of the many.

HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC?
I was a nu metal kid for a few years, but when I heard bands like The Clash and The Pistols, I could relate so much more to what they were saying. I was going out into a world where I couldn’t get a job, where a good future seemed impossible. And a lot of the punk bands from the 70’s were playing songs I could directly relate to. From there I started listening to newer stuff like Rancid and NOFX, that was all a long time ago and I still haven’t found a form of music that speaks to me more clearly than punk does
WHAT DOES TYPICAL WRITING AND RECORDING DAY LOOK LIKE?
Typically, someone has a riff or some chords, we bring it to rehearsals and see what we can do, sometimes it’s a more complete idea we might write it down or record something on a phone. Recording normally we do the drums first, then bass and guitars and then vocals.
HOW DID YOU GET YOUR BAND NAME?
The band name is a dichotomy of two opposing ideas, in our case something quiet and something loud.
WHAT HAS BEEN THE HARDEST THING ABOUT YOUR MUSIC JOURNEY SO FAR?
I think mostly just establishing ourselves as a band, getting our name out there. There’s a lot of great bands in our scene so trying to get the right exposure to the right people has been a struggle at times.
WHAT'S BEEN THE EASIEST?
The writing in the band has always been very natural and organic, songs have mostly just come out without needing to mess with them too much. We’ve written a lot of songs by now, so I think we have a good understanding of our own roles within the writing of a song.
WHAT WOULD YOU DOING IF YOU WEREN'T MAKING MUSIC?
I’ve had a lot of jobs! But without music I think I’d either have become a chef or a plumber, believe it or not! I trained to do both but never really enjoyed either!
WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN?
There’s two bits of advice that I heard and I live and die by them, the first is “trim the fat” which I take as when your writing a song, sometimes you can run away with yourself, if it doesn’t sound right, then trim the fat, get rid of the bits you don’t need essentially. The other is similar and it’s “don’t bore us, get to the chorus” which is the one I’m working on now, sometimes it’s good to get some slightly technical lead stuff, but the chorus the hook and the part most people will remember, so don’t keep a listener waiting a life time for it.
WHAT'S NEXT?
Once we’ve released and promoted the new stuff, we’ll hopefully be heading back to record another one early next year. We’ve always got new stuff being thrown around so we’re never short of a new song
