GREMARCH TALKS ABOUT NEW TRACK 'BITE THE BULLET'

Hey, Cody Hess here! Thanks for having me! Greymarch is essentially my solo project. I’ve been in bands that have toured with sizable acts like All That Remains, Ice Nine Kills, and Atreyu, but the pandemic pushed me in a different direction. I started work writing and recording the kind of engaging, aggressive metalcore that really spoke to me.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

Greymarch’s new single, “Bite the Bullet” is set to come out March 10. It’s an energetic, aggressive song with a solid blend of heaviness and melody. I’m very excited to get this one out into the world! It will be the fifth release, and will essentially wrap up the project’s debut EP.

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

“Bite the Bullet” is about flaky people, quite frankly. I’m sure I’m not the only one who gets frustrated when I’m left hanging by someone. In another sense, though, it’s about the struggle of building a brand in the music industry, and how it tends to weed out those who aren’t willing to put in the work. It’s definitely no easy task!

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

It’s been described as “a dynamic, engaging and highly accessible brand of modern metalcore.”

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

There’s so many to count! But I’d say, “Page Avenue” by Story of the Year. It came at a really formative time in developing my musical taste, and I was just awestruck by how dynamic, emotional, and powerful this album is. They merged artful lyrical alliterations with soaring anthemic music, anger with melancholy, and heaviness with harmony. They just released a new EP recently too, and I’d encourage everybody to check it out!

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

Besides doing my best to be a dedicated husband and father, I do a fair bit of woodworking. My first job was at a cabinet shop, and since then I’ve always been building something or other. In a previous band, I even built a road case that acted as a merch table, housing all our merch with a bright backlight display of the band’s logo on front. It was cool! If only it didn’t weigh so damn much.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

I think the stage fright, the nervousness, never really goes away. And why should it? It’s a really thrilling experience to perform and share your craft with others, and if it’s not, you’re doing it wrong. For me, the nervousness hits right before going on stage, and then dissipates somewhere in the opening song. After that, it’s all adrenaline.

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

In the beginning stages, I tried for several months to get a solid lineup going, but it wasn’t really clicking and eventually I just said to myself, “I’m gonna do this myself and make it happen.” I wrote, produced, tracked, and mixed everything myself, and recruited the help of Myles Clayborne of the band Saul to do the vocal work (I’m not much of a singer). I’m really proud of what came of it, and am looking forward to pushing it as far as it can go!

HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?

I workshop everything I do with people I trust, but ultimately it’s me. I’ve been in so many band environments with multiple points of view, and I truly think that much of the time the sum of the parts is greater than the individual. But since I’m just an individual, I do my best to think of all possible points of view and work to improve the songs with that experience.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

At the risk of sounding cliche, I draw a lot of inspiration from the things I see in the world that I think need to change. Prejudice, vanity, self-sabotage, and entitlement, topics I find relevant and want to address in a meaningful and artistic way. I pretty much write about things that remind me to be a better person, in the hopes that I can spread that message to as many people as possible in the process.

WHAT IS NEXT?

Greymarch runs on the idea of releasing music consistently, and I intend to do just that. Always writing, promoting, and hustling!
