FLASHBACK TO THE 90S WITH EMO PUNK ROCK BAND, HARPOON, THE WHALE

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF.

My name is Kaleb Richey, I play guitar and sing for Emo/Pop-punk band Harpoon, the Whale. I live in Laramie, Wyoming in the United States. I've been playing music since I was 14 years old and moved around the country a bit to study music.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

Our latest album was tracked at The Blasting Room, where bands like Rise Against and The Descendents also record. We started with drums around March 2021 and finished with Vocals that October.

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

I had written so many songs and was originally going to put out an EP, but it just kept growing and growing.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

Short, dense, and reminiscent of the late 90's

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

The Offspring's “Smash” was the first time I heard punk rock or anything grunge. Being from a small mountain town, my options for music were fairly limited. My dad got that cassette tape from a coworker, I believe. I had to make my own edited version so I could listen even to it.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

My personal favorite music video right now is Mini Trees' “Doomsday”

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

I'm usually playing video games or working on computers. I'm seriously quite the nerd.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

I actually do get nervous! I don't really feel nervous, but I have a nervous gag. It comes and goes.

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

It actually just started with a bunch of old college buddies who happened to move to the same town.

HOW DO YOU WRITE? - DO YOU HAVE A KEY SONGWRITER, OR DO YOU ALL WORK TOGETHER?

I actually do most of the writing. I love to demo all our songs at my house and add from there. It seems to help quite a bit since some of my band-mates live about a 3 hour drive away.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Most of my songs are about anxiety, so I guess my own personal struggles inspire me to write.

WHAT IS NEXT?

We're hoping to do a short run with our friends in SGRNY out of Cheyenne, Wyoming this coming February or March. We're hoping to keep pushing our latest album and hop on a few festivals throughout the year. We also love filming and recording live videos, so expect a few more of those in 2023!
