BUBBATREES TALK POP AND REWORKING THEIR SOUND

PLEASE INTRODUCE YOURSELF FOR US WHO ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH YOU AND YOUR MUSIC AND TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF.

Hi, I’m Andy and I write songs and play in a band called Bubbatrees.

TELL US A LITTLE BIT ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM OR SINGLE?

Our debut EP is called ‘Sweeter than water’ which is the name of the title track. It was released on the 4th of February and is the first installment of new music to come from us. Cameron and I have spent the past 2 years writing new songs and reworking our sound, and this is an entrance for our fans into a new era for Bubbatrees. Hopefully one they will enjoy.

WHAT INSPIRED THE ALBUM OR SINGLE?

I think the inspiration for this EP along with all of our upcoming new music was time. I ended up having a lot of free time the past couple of years which allowed me to dig deep and absorb myself into the creative process. Our new music has been inspired a lot by Pop music, we have aimed to keep a twist within this which is something I think we are known for. Content for this EP came from my wish for something better to happen to those who need it in life, a want to be alone in times of stress, and in stark contrast, one song is an anthem of not caring and trying to have the best time you can. A lot of different messages in each song.

CAN YOU SUM UP THE ALBUM IN A FEW WORDS?

Fresh but nostalgic.

WHAT RECORD CHANGED YOUR LIFE AND WHY?

Nirvana - Nevermind. My uncle had a copy when I was very young and I remember replaying it constantly on a portable CD player. It sparked my interest in playing music.

DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE MUSIC VIDEO FILMED BY YOUR BAND OR ANOTHER ARTIST?

My favourite music video by Bubbatrees is definitely our upcoming one. It is for our next single ‘Living inside of me’ and I love the dark and introspective nature of it. It was actually filmed and

edited by our Drummer Martin and he has perfectly captured the vibe of the song. That song is released on the 18th of February, the video’s release date is yet to be confirmed but keep an eye out. One of my favourite fairly recent music videos is ‘The birthday party’ by ‘The 1975’. I hadn’t seen anything like that at the time when they made it and I just love it.

WHAT WOULD WE FIND YOU DOING WHEN YOU'RE NOT MAKING MUSIC?

Alcohol or the gym! It’s ying and yang. I also go a lot of walks, I stay relatively near the countryside so I like going pretty far out and just being alone listening to music.

DO YOU GET NERVOUS PERFORMING LIVE, IF SO HOW DO YOU DEAL WITH THAT?

There is definitely pre gig anxiety to an extent but I never let it affect me badly, at the end of the day it’s part of the fun and enjoyment of playing live.

HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?

I played in numerous bands with Kyle and Martin growing up before we finally founded Bubbatrees. Cameron joined us in 2018 to help cement the sound we are known for now.

HOW DO YOU WRITE?

I write the majority of things myself, I’ll write parts on every instrument and then record vocal ideas on top and finally cement it all into a final version to take to everyone and see if there are any tweaks to be made. Cameron also writes for us and he will do things in this same way, he will usually write the music and I’ll add vocals on top to anything he writes. Once we take the final versions into the rehearsal room we work on it together and sometimes things change, but we never usually write songs just from jamming or anything like that. For me songwriting has become quite a personal thing and I work better on my own when I can think clearly about the direction I want to take things in, but having the input from everyone else helps keep things real and is very important.

WHAT INSPIRES YOU?

Life to be honest. Just my thoughts and experiences. I get inspired seeing other bands and artists doing well and it makes me want to create good music.

WHAT IS NEXT?

We have a lot of new music coming out this year and some of it will be very far from what you would usually expect from Bubbatrees which I think is a good thing. We are playing in London headlining for the first time on March 5th in The Fiddler, and will definitely be gigging as much as we can this year.
