ALBUM REVIEW: OTHERWISE 'DEFY'

For their first release on the Mascot record label, Las Vegas rockers, Otherwise, have pulled out the stops to make an album that appeals across genres. Teaming up with producer Matt Good [Asking Alexandria, Hollywood Undead] also heralds the start of a new chapter for the band too.

They throw electronica, nu-metal and heavy metal into the mix and the results are pretty successful, and hair whippingly heavy at times. Bad Trip's use of synths and vocal effects make the song feel very contemporary. Money taps into the consumer society and the deal with the devil that that goes with it. The carefree riff and pulsating melody almost make it a faustian pact that's worth selling your soul for. Don't Even and Fame and Miss Fortune is the reverse, pointing out the evils of social media, and our ignorance about ourselves and nature.

Lifted is a personal track about "getting fucked up". Its cautionary tale is another of the uber modern sounding tracks on the 11 track album. It has the added lyrical swagger of hip-hop and much of the chart tracks (until the screams come in of course). Goliath and Good Fight are two more mammoth tracks on an album that has managed to hit the zeitgeist of modern trends.

Groupie Rating 3/5
