Ameridian rock band Vaya calls on Mother Earth and the White Wolf as inspiration. Rooted in Native American heritage, the band use the knowledge of the elders, legends and higher guidance to express themselves via their music. Powerful, experimental and full blooded rock, we caught up with lead songwriter and singer Victoria Vaya to discover more about the band's unique music.
TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM/ PROJECT?
VAYA: Hi Photogroupie, nice to meet you and answer to your questions. So actually we are promoting the first double album on stage and are in process of the production of the second album in Toronto. This second album is a piece really strong, experimental and deep: translating energy, it’s pulse. An abstraction from the first one. So it is a real unique way to go through music. One piece of this second album will be out this Autumn through a little movie we just made in Japan, Fukuoka: working with Japanese creativity is opening real new doors.
WHAT INSPIRED ANY CENTRAL THEMES ON THE ALBUM?
VAYA: Human being, Nature, Universes law.
HOW LONG DID YOU SPEND RECORDING?
VAYA: Good question. I don’t count hours by the way;P!
HOW DID YOU GO ABOUT THE SONGWRITING PROCESS?
VAYA: It is really simple: more than having a break of it. I always have my leather book with me for writing down some words even when I am walking on the street. And if I don’t have it, thanks technology I have my cellphone putting down on it some vocal notes. The second way is like when I am in front of one of the painting I have to do. I am waiting for my muses, anywhere, seating on my art place, studio or in a café or museum and then melodies and words come into my mind easily.
DO YOU HAVE A FAVOURITE TRACK FROM THE ALBUM?
VAYA: The actual album? No. Each one of it has its own vibration and story. It is really depending of the mood.
WHO ARE YOUR BIGGEST INFLUENCES?
VAYA: UNIVERSE
HOW DID YOU FORM THE BAND?
VAYA: VAYA is not a band it is a project I began. Then people came through, shared, gave them print on it. But the actual live band started two years ago really naturally with the flow of VAYA’s call. And it is still a pleasure sharing the stage together.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE TO ANYONE STARTING OUT?
VAYA: Believe in yourself, the others will.
WHAT IS NEXT?
VAYA: Hide Out tomorrow. Then continuing the process of the second album. Autumn the little film with a song of the second album; a crossover between Canada and Japan. And finally working on a tour in South of America.
