  • This week's round-up: New music from Scarlet Rebels, Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown and Julian Taylor

This week we have new music from one of Wales' finest rock bands, electrifying blues rock and some spine-tingling Americana Scarlet Rebels - 'Secret Drug' Having already hoisted their flag into the UK Top 10 with their previous album 'See Through Blue', South Wales' Scarlet Rebels are poised to fire Welsh rock back into the mainstream spotlight with their new album 'Where The Colours Meet', announced today. Accompanying this hotly anticipated announcement (which was stoked further with frontman Wayne Doyle's recent feature and live set on Times Radio's Friday night show with Ed Vaizey) comes the new single “Secret Drug”. An anthemic stomper that pays dues to Stereophonics, The Cult and AC/DC, “Secret Drug” pairs classic Angus Young-style guitar swagger with an arena-sized chorus.  There’s a new, widescreen ambition at play here, ably supported by the crack production team of Colin Richardson and Chris Clancy in the studio. Doyle comments: 'We're incredibly excited to show the world what we've been up to. “Secret Drug” is the first chapter from our new story and we're so happy that we can finally unleash it on the world. It marks a new era for the band, defined by a feeling of bold new confidence that we have to thank our fans for since the release of our previous album 'See Through Blue'. The positivity that they bring to our world shines bright on ‘Where The Colours Meet’. 'With 'Where The Colours Meet', we made an album of unity, a call for togetherness in a world gone mad. Our last album was deliberately polarising – I don't regret that, and it was amazing to see everyone who did choose to stand with us as we spoke the truth about the wicked forces working in our world. But this time around, we made an album that will bring people together,' Doyle continues. 'I genuinely feel it’s the best set of songs we’ve written. The band's performance is superb and Colin [Richardson] and Chris [Clancy] brought totally new ideas and focus to our music. We hope you enjoy this album as much as we enjoyed making it.' The new video was shot with Shaun Hodson of Loki Films (Kris Barras Band, Those Damn Crows). 'Where The Colours Meet' sees the band radically expand their sonic palette, bringing in lush instrumentation, piano, keyboards and large drum sounds to channel the best of 80s rock. It’s an album full of fluid guitar lines, tasteful leads and irresistible choruses but with a contemporary full-on sound - a modern-day U2-meets-Bruce Springsteen. 'The album is an ode to the influences who made us the musicians we are today (Springsteen, Petty and Stereophonics, we’re looking at you), as well as the experiences who made us the people we are today,' Doyle adds. The album also welcomes collaborations with multi-award-winning blues artist Elles Bailey, who brings her velvety vocals to the co-written “Out Of Time”, and Ricky Warwick (Black Star Riders, The Almighty), who lends his songwriting prowess to the high-octane stomper and album closer, “My House My Rules”. Diehards will spot that two songs from Scarlet Rebels’ live sets come to life too, as “Let Me In” and “Practice Run”, which have been fixtures at their concerts, are now heard on a proper studio recording for the first time. Having made a name for themselves collecting items for food banks at their live shows, Scarlet Rebels are giving charity shops first access to their new music. Eagle-eyed fans will see the vivid ‘Where The Colours Meet’ vinyl sleeves begin to appear in their local charity shops from today, offering fans a sneak peek at their new music in return for donations to local charities such as Nottingham’s Emmanuel House. 100 preview copies will be distributed to charity shops across the UK. 'Where The Colours Meet' is out on 16th August 2024 and is available to pre-order on limited edition vinyl, signed CD, collector's bundles and more at earache.com/scarletrebels Pre-order Album  - https://earache.lnk.to/WhereTheColoursMeet Secret Drug is out now on all digital platforms - https://earache.lnk.to/SecretDrug Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown - 'Snake Oil' Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown announce their brand new, 11-track album Electrified whose no holds barred first single Snake Oil is released today Friday 12th April, along with its accompanying video. The band are releasing the album May 10th on their very own independently owned and operated label Rattle Shake Records. Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown fields Tyler Bryant himself as fiery frontman on vocals and his signature pink Stratocaster, Caleb Crosby thumping the drums con gusto, and Graham Whitford on guitar. The band rate Electrified is their most authentic release yet. “I think about the ‘Electrified’ recordings as sonic snapshots of who we are right now,” says Tyler, “It’s so easy to get red light fever when recording. I think since we started our own label and have been writing and recording music all the time, the whole process has become a little bit more normal, allowing us to be a little more at ease. In turn, I think this is potentially our most “authentically us” sounding album.” For drummer Caleb Crosby, “This album feels like the culmination of where we've been and where we want to be. I feel we pushed the boundaries even more for ourselves on this project.” Reflecting on the inspirations for Snake Oil — the first single to drop from the album —Tyler explains, “Two of my favorite rock bands are The Black Crowes and Blackberry Smoke. So many of my favorite times have been spent at their shows or with their tunes playing in the background. I desperately wanted to write a song in the spirit of these bands that I love, and I ended up with Snake Oil.” Recorded at TBSD’s musical headquarters, ‘The Lily Pad’, in Nashville, Tennessee, Electrified’s tracks demonstrate the band’s deeply held musical philosophy, that “In a fast-moving, increasingly digital world, vintage tube gear is considered obsolete by the majority, but for those still living on the fringes of time, there’s a quality of magic when pieces of gear from a different age power up — the dim glow of vacuum tubes purposefully burning and generating heat in the close quarters of a control room.’” Snake Oil’s video captures the band’s force and energy. The one drawback is that the black and white visuals don’t show off Tyler’s signature pink Strat, an iconic instrument which the Fender Custom Shop have homaged by releasing a very special, made-on-demand, limited-edition guitar. Nevertheless, the video’s stark but energetic visuals, complete with ghostly echoes, show Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown infusing the music with electrifying energy, including Tyler’s soaring guitar solo. Riffing on electricity, the band reflect, “For those watching meters, there’s always a dip in voltage around 6 o’clock. When workaday folks get home and start turning on their televisions and firing up their microwaves, the hum of electricity goes crackling down the power lines, lighting up the windows of house after house, street after street, mile after mile. But when the Moon has been high for hours and, slowly but surely, the nearby world starts to fall asleep — that’s when workanight folks, like Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown, come alive.” And come alive they do! Check out the killer combo of old school analogue equipment sound, fresh talent and soul-filled savvy songwriting that Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown bring into today’s limelight. LISTEN AT YOUR OWN RISK. BEWARE OF ELECTRICAL SHOCK. See website for updates and further details. http://www.tylerbryantandtheshakedown.com/ Julian Taylor - 'Weighing Down' Award-winning, Toronto-based, Americana/folk singer-songwriter Julian Taylor has released a brand-new single, 'Weighing Down', a track that seeks to lighten one’s load with uplifting encouragement. It’s one of those chilling, powerful tracks that gets the hairs on your arms to stand up. “What it also does is address the idea that, ‘All of us are our own worst enemies. All of us are so hard on ourselves,’” Taylor explains. “That kind of pressure, and the way it affects our health, both mentally and physically – that’s the weighing down of the world we put on our own shoulders because of things we think we’ve done wrong. What I’m saying here is, ‘I’ve got to relieve myself from all of this hurt – and so do you.’” 'Weighing Down' is the first single from Taylor’s forthcoming album, Pathways, which will be released September 27, 2024 on the Howling Turtle, Inc. label. The album follows on the heels of his most recent solo LPs, 2020’s highly acclaimed, award-winning album, The Ridge (which garnered Taylor’s anointing as Solo Artist of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards) and 2022’s equally lauded album, Beyond the Reservoir (nominated for two Juno Awards and three Canadian Folk Music Awards), as well as his 2023 career retrospective release, Anthology Vol. 1. Besides the first single ('Weighing Down'), Taylor plans a series of additional singles from Pathways leading up to the album release later this year, including: 'Running Away' on May 29th; 'Sixth Line Road' on July 10th; and 'Pathways' (featuring Allison Russell) on August 21st. More details about the album will be announced soon. Even when he’s recording and touring, Taylor remains busy with his long-running, weekly, three-hour radio show, “Julian Taylor’s Jukebox,” which is distributed by Native Voice One (NV1), the Native public radio distribution service which links over 200 stations across North America to Native radio programming, from reservation and village-based stations to top-market urban radio stations. The radio show is a genre-defying musical journey, focusing on BIPOC and independent artists like Taylor himself. The concept for “Julian Taylor's Jukebox” came from the Rowe AMI vintage jukebox in Taylor’s home, inviting listeners to hear what he would play for them if they were hanging out with him in his living room. Thi Taylor plans to tour in support of his new music, with confirmed tour dates in Canada and Europe, and plans to also hit the UK later this year including festival appearances at The Long Road and the British Country Music Festival - more dates to follow. With a live show that always wows audiences, Taylor caught the attention of Jeremy Vine of BBC Radio 2 last year at his show in London, who proclaimed that Taylor is “an incredible, profound, thoughtful, musical genius” on the social media platform X. Fans should follow Taylor on social media and his website for announcements of additional tour dates. Julian Taylor UK/EU Tour Dates: June 14 – Bertinoro, Italy | Rocca Vescovile June 15 – Pigra, Italy | La Societa Operaia June 17 – Bolzano, Italy | Pippo Stage June 18 – Traona, Italy | Giardino del Municipio June 22 – Lelystad, Netherlands | Corneel June 23 – Bever, Belgium | Rosario June 24 – Eindhoven, Netherlands | Muziekgebouw June 30 – Castelvetro, Italy | Lambruscheria ca Berti August 23-25 – The Long Road Festival August 22 – 31 – UK Tour (dates to be announced soon) August 30 - Sept 1 – British Country Music Festival ABOUT JULIAN TAYLOR: Toronto-based singer-songwriter Julian Taylor has been part of the musical fabric and landscape in Canada for two decades. Taylor enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2020, when his second solo acoustic album, The Ridge, earned more than five million plays on Spotify, praise from press worldwide, and airplay from America to Australia to the U.K. Loaded with soulful Americana and country twang, the album was produced by Taylor himself and Saam Hashemi, and was recorded at The Woodshed in Toronto. In addition to winning Taylor Solo Artist of the Year at the Canadian Folk Music Awards, The Ridge was also nominated for: two Juno Awards (Contemporary Folk Album of The Year, Indigenous Artist or Group of the Year), the Polaris Prize Long List, a Summer Solstice Indigenous Award (Contemporary Folk Album of the Year), a Canadian Music Week INDIES Award (Indigenous Artist of the Year), and an additional Canadian Folk Music Awards nomination in the English Songwriter of the Year category. The nominations and awards kept coming in 2022, with Taylor winning best male artist in the International Acoustic Music Awards and scoring five Native American Music Award nominations. In 2023, Taylor received a nomination in the Country Music Association of Ontario Awards in the Roots Artist of the Year category, and a further nomination for a Juno Award in the Contemporary Indigenous Artist of the Year category. Taylor is a major label veteran, Toronto music scene staple, and musical chameleon. His versatility as a songwriter is signature; one minute he’s onstage playing with his band spilling out electrified rhythm and blues glory, and the next he’s featured at a folk festival delivering a captivating solo singer-songwriter set. Formerly associated with the band Staggered Crossing, he has continued to record and perform as a solo artist and has released 12 studio albums since 2001. With his songs being placed in such TV shows as “Haven,” “Private Eyes,” “Kim’s Convenience,” “Degrassi: The Next Generation,” and “Elementary,” his versatility as a songwriter is signature. He has had four albums on the long list of the Polaris Prize in Canada and has charted on several Canadian and Indigenous Music Charts. Two songs from The Ridge album, the title track 'The Ridge', and 'Human Race', went to #1 on the Indigenous Music Countdown, while the Julian Taylor Band song 'Back Again' hit #3 on the same chart. Taylor is as explosive and captivating a live performer as you’ll ever see. Taylor has toured Canada and the U.S. countless times, sharing the stage with the likes of Serena Ryder, Blue Rodeo, William Prince, AHI, Rodney Crowell, Keb’ Mo’, and has performed at the Festival d’Été de Quebec, the Mariposa Folk Festival, Ottawa BluesFest, and more. Taylor was extremely honored to perform at not one but two Olympic Games, in Salt Lake City and Vancouver.

  • Lulu celebrates 60 years of an iconic career at The London Palladium

Champagne For Lulu live at The London Palladium 17th April 2024 On the 17th of April 1964, a 15-year-old, wee lass from Glasgow, blessed with a huge voice stormed the UK charts with a cover of the Isley Brothers song 'Shout'. From that day on Marie McDonald McLaughlin Lawrie would be forever known as Lulu and would go on to have number-one singles, a Grammy nomination, collaborate with some of the biggest names in pop music and get shot by French and Saunders in a hilarious sketch of Pulp Fiction. At 75, Lulu announced that this tour would be her last and to mark an extraordinary 60-year career, her final show wrapped up 60 years to the date when it all began. Introduced by Jennifer Saunders (the tour's name takes its name from a line in Absolutely Fabulous - a show that Lulu frequently appeared in over the years too.) In two memorable hours, Lulu took us on a whistle-stop tour of those last six decades. Along the way, we stopped off in 1967 when she had a hit with Neil Diamond's 'The Boat That I Row' and in 1969 for her Eurovision win with 'Boom Bang a Bang' and not forgetting 'The Man With The Golden Gun' - her Bond theme song. Her performance tonight is packed with her typical fireball energy and plenty of her usual charm. It's a delight and a privilege to see her on stage once more for a final time. Lulu changed her style over the years to a rockier, more bluesier sound. She reminded us of a few highlights by singing virtual duets with David Bowie on 'The Man That Sold The World' and 'The Fourth of May' with Maurice Gibb. It was the first of many emotional moments as we looked back over those icons of entertainment that are no longer with us. There's not much chit-chat between songs, but you get the impression when she talks about having Angels on her shoulders guiding her through her career, that she feels genuinely blessed for the experiences and opportunities she's had. 'Where The Poor Boys Dance' was a track co-written with her brother, Billy, and was a song about longing for the normality of home, something that she missed once her life had changed irrevocably all those years earlier. It's a wonderfully rueful track that received rapturous applause from the audience. Lulu pays tribute to the late Sidney Poitier with whom she made the ground-breaking anti-racist film 'To Sir With Love'. She also had a US smash hit with the song. She sings with such heartfelt emotion that she receives a long-standing ovation. She pauses after the song ends, just taking in the wave of appreciation from the crowd. Lulu has often talked about the connection with her audiences, and this was one of those unforgettable moments between an artist and their fans. It was a very tender moment to round off act one. Act two cranks up the energy with 'Independence' and her Grammy-nominated track 'Who's Fooling Who.' Another virtual duet, this time with the irreplaceable Tina Turner on the track 'I Don't Want To Fight', written by Lulu and her brother. It's special guest time, and Lulu recalls how in Glasgow great singers are called 'chanters', and her special guest tonight is certainly a 'real chanter' Emilie Sande pops in to do a turn. Her musical director Rick Krive, duets with her on a sublime rendition of 'We've Got Tonight' - I don't think the song has ever been sung better. 90s kids probably remember Lulu best for Ab Fab or 'Relight My Fire' - the #1 hit she had with Take That. As she launches into the song with her inimitable energy, she's joined on stage by Emile Sande and Jennifer Saunders, along with her sister Edwina who is also her backing vocalist. By this time in the evening, the audience is on their feet witnessing history. There's a real mix of age groups in the audience too, which proves the impact that Lulu's music has had on music lovers over the last 60 years. Lulu says we were all on this journey together, some joined later than others, but they have all shared in her illustrious career. By the time we get to the end of the show and join in with 'Shout', it's an overwhelming and very emotional night for everyone, no matter where they joined the ride or her remarkable career. Her touring days may be at an end, but she has no plans to give up singing which is indeed something to shout about. But for now, Lulu exits stage right to a thunderous applause that will be part of her enduring inspirational career and legacy as one of the greatest performers in music history. • Dan Patlansky live at Dingwalls Camden

Dingwalls, Camden 13 April 2024 Venerated blues guitarist Dan Patlansky returned to Dingwalls to promote his latest album 'Movin' On'. The South African nearly missed his stop off in the capital after cancelling his two previous dates due to illness, even though his voice was still struggling and raspier than usual, being a trouper, he pushed on. Dan's live shows are certainly much looser than listening to an album. There are more improvisational break-outs with some singing interspersed. Given his laryngitis, he probably wasn't complaining about the chance to give his voice a rest between noodling; and neither was the audience. Dan quite literally prepared us for a stratospheric night with 'Lift Off' - an energetic instrumental to warm up the band and the crowd. With the scene set, the toe-tapping opening track from his latest album, 'Red Velvet Suit' followed. The energy is already dialed up to an impressive 11 and it's maintained throughout the night, even in the slower moments. 'Who I Am' is a fierce statement of intent with more ballsy blues solos and powerful punchy vocals. His latest album is a homage to the kind of music he grew up with. Fed on a diet of classic rock and blues from Hendrix to Stevie Ray Vaughn, the retro vibe is evident in his music this time around. He's also known for injecting some red-hot guitar sounds with a heavier, more contemporary bite, so it was thrilling to hear the fusions of different eras on offer tonight. The title track from the album is inspired by his father's words for when things get difficult and life doesn't go to plan. The track shows things down and it has the redolence of Pink Floyd - another influence complete with echoey harmonies and pin-sharp guitar work. Although Dan wears his influences with pride, his guitar work is slick, fast and flashy but very clean. His songwriting also stands tall alongside his fretwork. Speaking of which, Snake Oil City from the album 'Shelter of Bones' saw an incendiary bit of soloing that was an opportunity for longtime collaborators Andy Maritz (Drums) and Greg Van Kerkhof (Bass) to get behind the percussive attack of Dan's solo. 'Tell Me' featured a guest appearance from 16-year-old Rhys John Stygal who is nominated for the 'Jules Fothergill Young Blues Artist of The Year Award for the 2024 UK Blues Awards. This moment descended into 100% pure blues jam before the set wrapped up. It's possibly these sorts of fast and loose moments of spontaneity that have helped Dan catch the musical ear of Bruce Springsteen and Joe Satriani. For those who like your blues unadulterated, look no further than Dan Patlansky. Supporting Dan was Leoni Jane Kennedy: a talented young songwriter in the vein of Tasmin Archer and Brandi Carlile. Her guitar work is precise and her songwriting is poetic and often heartfelt. Tracks such as 'Different Kind of Woman', and 'Ammunition' are great examples of her talent. Look out for her debut album later this year. Review Cathy Clark and Gerry Driver Photos by Gerry Driver

  • Video of the week: The Milk Men ‘Hungover’

The Milk Men are led astray on latest single Hungover! The Milk Men, known for their sharp sounding (and sharp dressed) live performances and innovative R&B take on the blues-rock sound, have mixed their renowned rhythm and blues with trouble and blues on brand new single, "Hungover." The new single is a further taster of the band’s forthcoming, and best to date, studio album, "Holy Cow!" Following on from the rhythm and country blues groove of "One Man Band," the short, snappy and boogie infectious "Hungover" is “a simple tale about lacking self-discipline and keeping bad company,” says the band’s singer Jamie Smy. “We've all got those friends who lead us astray. Trying to do the right thing but always finding yourself back in the same old hole, and the only way out of the hole is to repeat and, as the song, says, ‘let the good times roll!’ A lot of research went into the lyrics for this song!” laughingly concludes Jamie. “We wanted a tight, punchy, catchy track with some swagger that you can really get in to,” says the band’s guitarist & co-producer Adam Norsworthy. “And the song tells a funny, light-hearted story most of us can probably relate to!” That story is reflected in the accompanying video, which sees all four band members donning costumes to portray the song’s various characters: the preacher, the pimp, the angel and the devil. “We had great fun making the video,” says Jamie. “I think from the first shot to the last you can see we are not taking ourselves too seriously… and we never do… but we take the music very seriously.” “Yes, it’s intentionally cheesy, which is kind of fitting for four Milk Men!” adds Adam. “But then what do you do when your video director is called away on a big job at the last minute? You go down to the charity shop, buy some cheap costumes and put together the most DIY video in history!” Hungover" is available now on all digital platforms: https://themilkmen.hearnow.com/hungover Scheduled for release on May 3rd, "Holy Cow!" marks the band's fifth studio album, following a string of critically acclaimed releases. With a reputation as one of the most dynamic and enjoyable live acts on the circuit, The Milk Men have earned five nominations at the UK Blues Awards and were finalists in the UK Blues Challenge, solidifying their status as premier purveyors of British R'n'B talent. Comprising former Pirate Mike Roberts on drums, Lloyd Green (son of guitar legend Mick Green) on bass guitar, husky blues-hued singer Jamie Smy on vocals, and the guitar prowess of Adam Norsworthy (also known for his work with The Mustangs), The Milk Men bring a wealth of experience and musical pedigree to their latest offering. Drawing inspiration from a diverse range of influences (everything from AC/DC to Stevie Wonder), The Milk Men infuse Dr. Feelgood vibe'd R&B with a modern edge, characterized by their signature attack, energy, melody, bags of hooks and a sense of fun. "Holy Cow!" showcases the band's evolution and raw authenticity, as Adam expands upon: “This album is leaner, tougher, and more dynamic than any we have made before... but still dripping with hooks and some great lyrics. It’s very much what we do... just better than ever!” Jamie Smy adds, “I see this album as having a number of core themes which could all be bracketed under 'the blues' in terms of subject matter, if not musically. 'Holy Cow' is far rawer than our other albums with less overdubs and less backing vocals, but still packed with hooks, melody, and attitude. It's the closest we've got to The Milk Men live experience in the studio.” To pre-order your signed copy of  "Holy Cow " on CD or Vinyl, visit The Milk Men merchandise page: https://www.themilkmenmusic.com/uk-merchandise.html Pre-ordering means you will receive your copy of the album by post a few days before the official release date; you will also receive (in the next couple of weeks, via email) a free download of an exclusive remix of one of the band’s most popular early tracks, "Make Mine A Double" -- the perfect complement to Hungover! • This week's round-up: New music from AK & The Red Kites, Limbonauts and The Commoners

A debut single, a protest song and a heartfelt tribute in this week's round-up of some great new music AK & The Red Kites - Devil's Stomp AK & The Red Kites are pleased to release the hook-laden debut single ‘Devil's Stomp’ available now on all digital platforms. Pulling inspiration from a myriad of modern rock and legacy bands, the dark and brooding song would not be out of place on a hit dramatic TV show such as ‘Yellowstone’ or Marvel's ‘The Punisher’. A modern rock band with a retro-infused vibe, AK & The Red Kites bear big riffs and vast melodic soundscapes. The cornerstone of this new exciting venture is frontman/guitarist Andrew Knightley, rising from the ashes of his previous band blues rockers Trident Waters. “‘Devil’s Stomp’ came about from a bunch of trips to the US and images of wastelands in the old Wild West, of a nefariously natured preacher man passing through taking his self-entitled dues from the local town folk.” Accompanying the single is the cinematic and sweeping video, “The original plan was to shoot in Joshua Tree US, but we ended up on the UK Yorkshire Moors with amazing weather conditions which really enhance the emotional charge of the song and the drone shots reflect the name of the band.” Having eloped to the Chiltern Hills UK during the global pandemic, Andrew began writing songs that would shape the project to come. “I wrote most of my new music looking out the window onto the woods and the Red Kites are always circling overhead. I felt a connection, that they were part of my inspiration, as they glided across the sky crying and going about their business. I wanted to honour that sense of freedom and protection that they have provided me with. AK & The Red Kites is a direct reference to my creative process and where I am now as a person.” Working with multi-platinum award-winning producer Mike Krompass (Everybody Loves An Outlaw), the forthcoming releases will showcase Knightley's eclectic range as a songwriter and musician; ranging from full on high tempo hard rockers to panoramic swamp vibes with incursions into country and blues rock territory in the vein of Rival Sons, Greta Van Fleet and ZZ Top. “There were about 25 tracks demoed and initially there were only going to be 10 recorded. As the process went on we decided to stretch that to 16 as there were too many strong tracks to whittle it down. It’s a really exciting project and I can’t wait for the world to hear what’s been cooking!” With audiences also promised a visually striking experience when the full band take to the stage, AK & The Red Kites is perched to soar throughout the rest of the year and beyond. LIMBONAUTS - 'Sacred Bomb' Following on from their last release ‘Come 2 Where U R’,  The Limbonauts return with a fierce peace anthem for troubled times. Sacred Bomb is a full-blast assault on the warmongering hypocrisies of organised religion and a desperate call for spiritual renewal, encased in a platinum shell of explosive rock and roll fury. The Limbonauts are a mysterious space rock entity from another dimension or maybe from a studio in the outer limits of Texas.  Who knows?  Sacred Bomb drops out of Limbo on April 11th 2024 via radiosapien/Distrokid. Sensitive listeners are advised to seek shelter. The Commoners - 'See You Again' Following the success of their previous three singles “Devil Teasin’ Me,” “The Way I Am,” and “Too Soon To Know You,” Canadian roots and rock band The Commoners are pleased to announce the Friday 12h April release of “See You Again” – the fourth single taken from their highly anticipated third studio album, Restless. Released by Gypsy Soul Records on Friday 5 July 2024, Restless is available to pre-order at www.thecommoners.ca/store. An emotionally compelling roots anthem, “See You Again” is an ode to love and loss, good times and memories made, featuring a chorus fit for kicking up dust on the backroads with the windows down. Full-bodied acoustic guitar guides this track through contemplation to celebration. The new single is a tribute to the father of Commoners drummer Adam Cannon, who passed away when the band were on tour in the UK in 2023. “We were in Sheffield when we received the news,” remembers Commoners lead singer, Chris Medhurst.   “Halfway through our first UK tour, Adam was faced with the impossible decision if he should fly back to Canada to be with his father in his final moments. Greg, being a drummer himself, wanted nothing more than for Adam to keep going and make the family name proud. But the decision still weighed heavily on Adam and the band, as nothing felt like the right path forward.” “A couple of days later in Birmingham, the decision was made for us. We played for Greg that night and have continued to do so every night since. "See You Again" is a song inspired by and dedicated to Greg. It’s also a message that each of us has been able to contextualize within our own lives, honouring the memory of people we’ve loved and lost. It’s a tribute that stretches across the sands of time as an ode to those who are no longer with us. We hope fans enjoy it and that it will resonate with those who have experienced loss in their lifetime.”

  • Video of the Week: Five Finger Death Punch 'This Is The Way' Ft DMX

Multi-platinum hard rock powerhouse FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH have released the digital deluxe version of their acclaimed album AFTERLIFE via Better Noise Records. Stream/download AFTERLIFE: DELUXE HERE. The deluxe edition includes the original 12 tracks recorded with the band’s longtime producer Kevin Churko (Ozzy Osbourne, Disturbed), in addition to four bonus tracks including three acoustic versions of the album’s songs “The End,” “Judgement Day,” and “Thanks For Asking” plus the brand new highly anticipated single, “This Is The Way,” featuring the late legendary rapper DMX. To further celebrate the release, Five Finger Death Punch have shared the music video for “This Is The Way (feat. DMX)” directed by none other than highly influential filmmaker Hype Williams, a longtime friend and close collaborator of the late DMX. Hailed by the New York Times in 2024 as “The Nineties Wunderkind,” Hype Williams is known for his seminal work with luminaries like Tupac, Wu-Tang Clan, and Jay-Z amongst others. Watch the video  out below or directly via YouTube HERE. “Music is meant to be universal and without boundaries, and it starts at the top with us, the artists,” says Five Finger Death Punch guitarist Zoltan Bathory. “We have always embraced the mixing of genres, whether it be the remake of LL Cool J's "Mama Said Knock You Out" featuring Tech N9ne as a guest, or our collaboration with blues warrior Kenny Wayne Shepherd, country star Brantley Gilbert, and Brian May, the legendary guitarist of Queen, on the song ‘Blue on Black.’” “The idea of collaborating with DMX had been in discussion for years, and it was a long and winding road to turn this particular item on our wish list into reality. He was a lyrical warrior, a true original who spoke his mind incorruptibly. We have always viewed DMX as “the metalhead of hip-hop’ because of his aggressive, raw, and untamed style. He growled and snarled, aiming to rattle some cages–an attitude we share, as Five Finger Death Punch has always been drawn to the fearless and the real. It made all the sense in the world, but today this is more than just a song; it's a salute to a legend, a way to honor DMX's memory.” When playing the song for other hip-hop legends, DMC of Run DMC, one of the originals to do it first with “Walk This Way” with Aerosmith said, “The sound of the music, what Ivan is singing about, and what X is talking about, is how X lived his life. The struggle, the dark with the light, the bad with the good, the pain with the joy. This song is very emotional, very musical, it’s very well rounded.”

  • Feeder 'Black/Red' review: Feeder wrap up their trilogy with a mighty double-album

Feeder are thirty years old, but still rocking it like it's 2000 - go and pinch yourself, you heard right. The band follow up 2022's 'Torpedo' with a monster double album: the final part of their trilogy. It's an album that needs time and investment, but it's worth getting stuck in. This two-parter is packed with rocking radio anthems, alongside album-orientated tracks that will never make the airwaves but could easily become fan favourites. Tracks like the deliciously riffy 'Sleeping Dogs Lie' and 'AI Man' all deal with fear of alienation, technology, politics, mental health and the fate of humanity are all recurring themes in the album. The doom-style guitars and grungy percussion, intertwined with otherworldly electronic sounds play into these themes even more. This is Feeder Redux: older, wiser, more self and world-aware, more mindful and the music they play shows this evolution. 'The Knock' sums this up, in the journey of life and how to ride the wave. The songs aren't all doom and gloom in terms of tone, the band offers moments of light to escape the mad world. The stadium-worthy 'Soldier of Love' is an uplifting anthem for keeping your head in this crazy world. On the flip side 'Submarine' continues this theme to 'get away from the rat race'. The 'Black' disc is a rock with a dash of retro pop as tracks like 'ELF' have a heady dose of 00s nostalgia- even if they do have the vibe of a heavyweight Coldplay to them. 'Hey You' and 'Playing With Fire' opts for a more aggressive tone that runs through the album. While the 'Red' side takes things down a notch but is still packed with Feeder's alt-rock exuberance. album closer 'Ghosts on Parade' is a particular highlight Despite releasing a double album, there's no great deviation from the Feeder sound we know and love, it may be a little more introspective, but it's also an epic listen.

  • Joe Bonamassa live at the Royal Albert Hall

Royal Albert Hall 5th April 2024 Joe Bonamassa  headed to the Royal Albert Hall to play two shows - his only tour dates here this year.(Although he is playing at the Black Deer Festival this summer.) Bonamassa is no stranger to the boards at the Albert Hall, he's probably as familiar with them as his fretboard and he should be: Tonight’s show marks his 12th show at the iconic venue. Punctual as ever with the 7.30 start, the lights are low and the band enter the stage together. There's already whoops from the crowd as they make out the shapes of the muscians settling behind their instruments for two hours of electrifying blues rock. There's usually no support for his shows, tonight is just the same. If you've never been to a Joe Bonamassa gig let me fill you in: he gets on stage, struts his stuff and his playing is so smokin' hot he doesn't need a warm up act. Joe is dressed in his typical attire of suit and shades, looking more Wall Street than Beale Street. But we're not here to assess him on his sartorial choices. Suffice to say that by keeping it simple with zero distractions allows the music to speak for itself. Or perhaps it’s a tribute to the original blues men who kept things smart. Either way his look has become part of his stage persona and as recognisable as the music he plays. He launches into ‘Hope You Realize It’ (sadly without the horn section) followed by the comforting retro sound of ‘Twenty- Four Hour Blues’, both tracks are taken from ‘Blues Deluxe Vol 2’ released last year. There's already been some killer solos, the audience are on their feet cheering and we're only two songs in! Smokin' Joe is just getting started with songs like the Pink Floydesque ‘Self Inflicted Wounds’ that features backing vocalist, Jade McCray doing her best to channel Clare Torry - it's spellbinding stuff. Jimi set his guitars on fire, Prince made love to them and Pete smashed them up.  Joe coaxes them like a magician, running his fingers up and down the neck casting a spell before unleashing the spirit of all the great guitar men who've come before. Eagled eared members of the audience will spot some familiar licks and styles from Dave Gilmore, to Jeff Beck. Joe is a total sponge of music, so it's not surprising that when casting his spell vignettes from the past pop out. By now there's a woman at the back of the hall that is pratically orgasmic, singing at full volume, cheering in the pin-drop silence. Joe even gives her a shout out as being one of three best singers in the room (the other two being back-up singers - the incredibly talented Jade McCray and Danielle De Andrea) The band move on to ‘Shout About It’ and another new release, ‘Last Matador of Bayonne’.  Theres plenty of improvisational break outs from Joe, Josh Smith and the sublime Reese Wynans along the way. By the midway point, it's time for Joe to pause and say a few words where he pays tribute to his friend, the late Bernie Marsden. He then introduced the terrific live band, who quite frankly would be worth the entry price alone! Lamar Carter, is one of the most soulful and expressive drummers I’ve had the pleasure of seeing. First class bass player, Calvin Turner wears a Reese Wynans tee shirt, which just goes to show the deep respect musicans have for each other. When introducing Wynans, Joe encourages the audience to get on their feet to honour the rock and roll hall of fame inductee. It’s possibly the biggest cheer of the night. Then it’s back to business with ‘Heart That Never Waits’. The band continue to cut loose with Josh Smith, Reece and Lamar all given space to let rip before the end of the evening. After a rousing applause the encore of ‘Mountain Time’ and the Cream classic ‘Crossroads’ rounds off show 12 at the Albert Hall. I know that sometimes Smokin' Joe gets roasted for being ubiquitous, but the fact that he's a one man music factory shows his dedication to the blues genre. If he's not writing and releasing material, he's working with other musicians. This isn't an ego trip, far from it, this is a musician who has a one track mind on blues music. His shows are always fun, energetic, unpredictable and awe-inspiring and filled of some of two hours of pretty much wall to wall blues from some of the finest musicians on the planet. If you get the chance to see him live you won’t be disappointed. Better still, you can be home and tucked up in bed with your coco by 11pm. How very rock and roll! • "It’s all David Bowie’s fault" CP from A Permanent Shadow puts his brand of synth pop in the Spotlight

I’m CP, singer in A Permanent Shadow. I’m of Austrian origin but have lived in Spain for the last 25 years. I started APS some 5 years ago, and we have two full albums and an EP under our belt. TELL US ABOUT YOUR NEW ALBUM We have a new album out called “No Leaf Clover”. Most of our albums are somewhat conceptual, and this one is no exception. It’s basically about toxic relationships on different levels: father-son, idol-fan, brother-sister and so on. Happy-go-lucky it isn’t. WHICH SONG WOULD YOU SAY SUMS UP YOUR SOUND THE BEST? Of the new bunch, I’d say the song “Little Ones”. It sums up perfectly what we want to be. It’s danceable, hummable yet with a lyrical content which may make you a tad uncomfortable. HOW DID YOU GET INTO MUSIC? It’s all David Bowie’s fault. When I heard the album “Let’s Dance” for the first time I knew I wanted to be a musician. Looking back now, it’s not Bowie’s best work, but it ignited my passion for Rock and Roll. WHAT DOES A TYPICAL WRITING AND RECORDING DAY LOOK LIKE? We usually work office-hours, Spanish office-hours that is. Ten-to-seven with a long lunch break. Our records are pretty layered, so after laying down the instruments separately, the major chunk of work is the post-production which involves forever listening to the same loops over and over again until we all want to kill each other. HOW DID YOU GET YOUR BAND NAME/ STAGE NAME? I always thought that A Permanent Shadow sounded really cool. When I looked up what it actually meant, I thought it was even cooler as it can mean a variety of things, from a skin condition to dark spots on the moon and after-effects of nuclear war. WHAT HAS BEEN THAT HARDEST THING ABOUT YOUR MUSIC JOURNEY SO FAR? Getting recognized is the hardest and to me also the most annoying part. When you are recording you are in this kind of isolated state where you and some other people brew up something new and exciting almost in secret. But there comes a point when recording is finished and you need to sell your work to the world, and that’s where the fun stops, as far as I’m concerned. WHAT'S BEEN THE EASIEST? I think the creative process is really easy once you get rid of your ego. It has an almost healing or at least calming effect on you. Maybe I’m lucky enough to be working with like-minded people, but creatively it really has been an easy ride so far. WHAT WOULD YOU DOING IF YOU WEREN'T MAKING MUSIC? I’m a trained grief counsellor, so I’d probably be helping people getting through hard times, which is not the worst job in the world either. WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU’VE BEEN GIVEN? Get a lawyer and lower your expectations. WHAT'S NEXT? The new album will require some promotion and hopefully open enough doors to enable us to play live, and then it’s back to the studio for a covers EP and album number four.

  • This week's round-up: New music from Ayreon, Apocalyptica and Susan Santos

Underwater Worlds, a classical spin on Metallica and some smooth blues rock Ayreon 'The Day The World Breaks Down' Ayreon reveals the spectacular live video for "The Day The World Breaks Down" which features an enormous singing cast of Damian Wilson, Daniel Gildenlow, Jan Willem Ketelaers, Simone Simons, Maggy Luyten, Jaycee, Hansi Kürsch, Mike Mills, Tom Englund, Anneke van Giersbergen, Marcela Bovio and Irene Jansen. An Ayreon live event is a monumental occasion where the highest-calibre musicians and an enormous production come together to forge a bombastic spectacle. Talking about the song, Arjen Lucassen says, "Finally… on my birthday… here is the 2nd videoclip from the Ayreon ‘Live Beneath The Waves’ DVD/BluRay! I picked the song The Day That The World Breaks Down because firstly it’s one of my favorites and secondly it features many of the talented singers. We never thought we could pull this complicated song off in a live setting, but seems like we did it! Let me know if you agree… enjoy." In September 2023, Arjen Lucassen's '01011001 - Live Beneath the Waves' sold out five performances at Poppodium 013 in Tilburg, The Netherlands. Today, Ayreon is excited to announce the release of this concert on 3LP, 2CD+DVD, Blu-ray, Earbook, and digital formats on 17 May, through Music Theories Recordings / Mascot Label Group. Indulge in a taster with the first live video of "The Sixth Extinction" HERE. You can pre-order '01011001 - Live Beneath the Waves' here. This live production, based on the critically acclaimed 2008 concept album '01011001,' was performed in its entirety, followed by a number of encore songs. The stage came alive with an imposing backdrop, LED screens showcasing fantastic visuals, lasers, pyrotechnics, special effects, and a unique live surround sound experience – a setup that would be at home on Broadway or London's West End. Ayreon mastermind Arjen Lucassen, alongside keyboardist Joost van den Broek, assembled a remarkable lineup, featuring many original cast members from the 01011001 album and various special guests such as Simone Simons (Epica), Damian Wilson (Threshold), Anneke van Giersbergen, Jonas Renkse (Katatonia), Tom Englund (Evergrey), Daniel Gildenlow (Pain of Salvation), Marcela Bovio (MaYan), Brittney Slayes (Unleash the Archers), Hansi Kürsch (Blind Guardian), John Jaycee Cuijpers (Praying Mantis), Maggy Luyten (Beautiful Sin), Michael Mills (Toehider) and Wudstik, among other incredible musicians. The band featured top instrumentalists from the genre - Ed Warby (Drums), Johan van Stratum (Bass), Timo Somers (Guitar), Marcel Coenen (Guitar), Joost Van Den Broek (Keyboards) and more. The enigmatic Lucassen himself made an appearance, marking this as the largest cast in Ayreon's live show history, which is no mean feat. 'Live Beneath the Waves' vividly brings to life the water planet Y, immersing audiences in this technological underwater world. - 'The Unforgiven II' APOCALYPTICA are thrilled to release the second single from Apocalyptica Plays Metallica, Vol. 2 – the hotly-anticipated sequel to their legendary debut record. 'The Unforgiven II' falls hot on the heels of first single 'The Four Horsemen', featuring Metallica’s very own bassist Rob Trujllo. “We wanted to balance what we were doing between old and new,” says lead cellist Perttu Kivilaakso. “'The Unforgiven II' has such beautiful melodies and the lyrics are great, too! I loved the fact that we’ve been able to bind this record and our first record together in this way." Apocalyptica Plays Metallica Vol. 2 will continue the journey that began in 1996 when cellists from Helsinki’s world-renowned Sibelius Academy played symphonic tribute to the biggest of the big four – heavy metal titans Metallica. For their ninth record the classically-minded dynamos are returning to their roots to bring a legendary story full circle. It also features a host of surprises beginning with a unique collaboration. Second single 'The Unforgiven II', taken from Metallica’s 1997 album Reload is a stunning reimagining of a cast-iron classic, setting the scene for a compendium of deep cuts and brilliant highlights spanning Metallica’s staggering 40 year career, and there are more surprises to come. Founding band-leader Eicca Toppinen comments: “It’s the coolest thing. We didn’t push - it was offered. We played the first album live and it was so much more fun and exciting than we expected, so we got the idea to do something like the first album, but we couldn’t do it in exactly the same way – we needed to challenge ourselves and bring a totally new perspective to the original energy and emotion of Metallica.” Lead cellist Perttu Kivilaakso adds: “We’ve been talking about making another Metallica album for around 20 years, as there were still so many great songs we wanted to play! We waited for the perfect moment to do it. Thinking of that teenage me who is now getting to play his favourite tracks gives me goosebumps!" Susan Santos - 'So Long' Today, Blues rock guitar sensation, Susan Santos celebrates the release of her new studio album Sonora with her new single “So Long.” Sonora is Santos’ sixth studio album. The album title encapsulates the overall vibe that permeates throughout the eight songs. Although each of the album tracks vary in style, they all share a common thread – the desert.
