K.FLAY ‘MONO’

The fifth album from K.Flay is a personal one. Last year the singer woke up and found she had gone deaf in her right ear due to a rare condition called SSNHL (Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss) and Labyrinthitis.

No longer hearing life stereo, the album does it’s best to crank up the volume. In amongst her evolving rap flows and melodies are dark and twisted electronics that tell of the cathartic journey towards acceptance, if not necessarily achieving it.

The album’s opener ‘Are You Serious?’ starts this disorienting voyage and the excellent ‘Raw Raw’ adds further violent tones to this electronic beast.

There’s also track like the brutal ‘Irish Goodbye’ featuring Vic Fuentes of Pierce the Veil, which deals with a break up. It’s one of the heaviest tracks in K. Flay’s catalogue to date.

MONO is an album that deals with life’s changes, but K. Flag isn’t one to go down without a fight, but as the track ‘Spaghetti’ suggests. But it doesn’t mean that you have to  be happy about life’s twists and turns, it’s more about dancing in between the raindrops.
